Greetings to all..... been away from the forum for a while. Have the basic lenses for my D5300 and wish to acquire a versatile lens for travel photos. Within the next year I will also likely buy a full frame camera.

Any feedback on the AF-S 200-500? I’ve seen some articles claiming Nikon had software problems with it, but those problems should be corrected by now.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Agree with those here who say it's fairly safe to travel with your gear on a cruise. That said, I keep my gear in the cabin and only bring out what I think I will need while out and about. I highly suggest using a monopod as it is so much faster than setting up a tripod, which also limits your potential of being targeted. If you have a cabin with balcony you can bring tabletop tripod instead of big tripod to save room in gear bags. Go light as possible.

So many great monitors out there. I bought the NEC PA272 last spring and love it. Excellent screen and very solid sturdy base too. If all else fails and you somehow find the NEC try to get it.

One of the greatest things we enjoy as Americans is freedom of speech. Here we are participating in that. Another great American ideal is our standard for justice, "Innocent until proven guilty".

Every UHH member's opinion is worth something, but the facts will eventually emerge and then each of us can choose what we want to do.

I don't see the value in throwing B&H under the bus. They have proven themselves to be very reliable in so many ways. Same can be said for Adorama. Let's face it, no entity is perfect. If some distasteful business practices are confirmed, hopefully they will be addressed and fixed. Why does it seem so popular to criticize "big business"? Let's not be hypocrites.

Get some great shots downtown at the Freedom Tower and try to get high up on a rooftop at night too. There is a nice rooftop lounge at 230 5th Avenue (at 27th Street) with good views around. Nice place to share a drink with your wife.

All of the above suggested by others is great. Add one more:

The Clark Museum in Williamstown

They have exhibit right now of Van Gogh and also have original Whistler's Mother. Ending soon.

I keep my monopod in my car and use it much more often than my tripod. Although the monopod has limitations it is very easy to set up and use. The tripod is much more stable, but cumbersome and obvious too. The monopod has been used in crowds of people, on rooftops and other places where a tripod wouldn't work at all. It was one of my best gear purchases.

Mildly amusing at best. Not compelling in the least.

In fact, the Lytro Illum light field camera was on sale two days ago at B&H. Regular price I think around $1,300 the sale price was $800 or so. This camera has a low megapixel image, but completely unique technology. You just point and shoot wherever you want. When you view the image afterwards you can actually decide which part of the image you want to be in focus. Really whacky stuff. Might be what you want and might not, but maybe you can take a look.

Just in case your real budget is under $200 (not $2,000) by interesting coincidence, this manufacturer has two entry level versions that are frequently on sale at either Groupon or Woot. Both can be had for a few hundred bucks or less.

I'm not endorsing this product, but it might be what you're looking for. Best of luck!

I'm not a professional photographer but I have dealt with literally a few thousand contracts in my business. I've seen just about every possible situation over the past 30+ years, including a few deaths (try dealing with that!).

You have already received 2/3 of your fee. Keep the law and integrity on your side. Great advice given by others here....send them the certified letter, return receipt requested by registered mail. Send another copy via overnight service (FedEx or Express Mail, etc...). If the client lives nearby I would absolutely pay them a visit and keep your cool. Hopefully nothing truly bad is brewing behind the scenes.

If the above doesn't yield a positive outcome then, obviously, there is something wrong. Hopefully, it's merely a matter of the client running short on funds and they're just burying their heads in the sand. Many people who get married spend much more than they can afford and realize that too late into the process. Maybe, on their wedding day they will receive enough money in gifts from their guests to allow them to pay your invoice.

If it were me, I would go ahead and provide the service contracted for, but not release one shred of any finished product until you are paid.

Ultimately, people want what they want. I can't imagine the client wouldn't try hard to get those photos. You will be in the driver's seat and remain in the clear legally.

Best of luck!

Unless you always shoot red apples you have no way of knowing what inks will run out first. If your budget allows I would get the 8 pack and there after you can worry about individual inks.

The X-Rite display pro is for your monitor only. That said you can use the generic ICC paper/printer profiles and come very close. Providing you load the appropriate profile into the software and let the software, LR, PS etc. handle the color corrections. Never leave it up to the printer unless you like reprinting over and over. Turn the "printer handles color" option OFF.

If you use LR and shoot RAW then the default color space is ProPhoto which gives you the largest color space available. If you shoot jpg then your color space is set to (what ever you set your camera to capture, probably) Adobe RGB (medium) or Srgb (lowest) color space.

If you are planning on doing your own printing then shoot in RAW to capture the largest color space you can. You can always knock it back to srgb for web viewing if required but you can't take an srgb and punch it back up to ProPhoto. OK, you can but it won't give you any more than the original srgb.

That would be like putting a speedometer that is capable of reading 300 Kph into a car that can barely manage to do 100 Kph. And for those that come from prehistoric countries, that translates to 180 mph and 60 mph. Red Alert, Shields Up, Mr. Worf, arm phasers, brace for impact.

Also, use reputable paper, Ilford, Hahnemuhle, Breathing Color to mention a few, and not the dime store variety. You will find it very difficult to acquire proper ICC profiles form the cheap papers and knock off brands. Those ones will also vary greatly between batches as a general rule.

Always use proprietary (Canon) inks! Yes you can save some bucks in the short term and it looks good... but when you give someone a gift and you see it 9 months later and it is definitely green or a washed out yellow how will you rationalize the saved dollars and loss of personal integrity then?
Unless you always shoot red apples you have no way... (show quote)

Wow, Peter!..... Thank you!!! That was really insightful info and I will try using your advice as given.

Hey, just curious.....what is the local speed limit where you live? In New York we can't go too fast cause the roads are so bumpy.

Any advice would be appreciated. I have a Canon Pixma Pro-100 printer that bought almost one year ago during one of Canon's big rebate offers. I haven't even opened the box yet and now want to start using it.

Can I use my X-rite display pro to calibrate the printer? Do I need to calibrate? I know some of this also depends upon the paper used. Again, any advice is appreciated.

Canon is now running a new promotion for various things including ink. Seems like a good time to back up the cartridges that come shipped with the new printer as they probably aren't full versions. Should I just go ahead and buy the whole 8-pack? Or, should I just buy the individual ink tanks that will get consumed fastest?

I'm just an amateur, but really like the idea of printing my own stuff and giving prints away as gifts. Because I'm not intending to sell anything, I suppose I don't really need the very best, but it's just in my nature to always try to achieve something better if I can.

Thanks to all.

I also have the D5300. First bought the Sigma 10-20 and liked it, but very quickly upgraded to the Tokina 11-16 version II, the one with the focus motor. Great build quality and it delivers beautiful wide angle images. I've done extensive research and, for me, it was the best wide angle lens choice. It even works on full frame to a limited extent.

Others here have recommended taking along a P&S too. Probably a good idea. You can pick up a refurb long zoom for peanuts and cover the range beyond 300mm.

Costco sells Dolica tripods that are inexpensive and have the monopod built in to the tripod design. Recently carbon fiber model was on sale.

I have a Vanguard aluminum and am quite happy. Often on sale at various sources including B&H.

Good luck.
