I am lucky enough to be going on a cruise to the Caribbean on Sunday.
I am looking for suggestions for disguising my camera gear whilst exploring the sights. We have all seen travellers proudly displaying the Camera name and model on their carry straps ( a good indication of the cost of the gear they are using) I Have non OEM straps with the names blacked out, I recently read about taping over a camera and lens to make it look as if it has been repaired. which I thought I might try I am taking my Canon 100-400 lens for the wildlife,as we all know this is very white any ideas on how I might tone it down a bit

I've been on several Caribbean cruises with top end Nikons and never had a problem. Get good insurance and don't get too worried. Just make sure the strap is across your body, not over one shoulder.

Have a great time and post pictures upon your return!

I have not been to the Caribbean, but agree with the insurance and strap.

An extension of your owners insurance is your best disguise.

Anyone who is in the business of stealing cameras knows all the tricks. They would spot that piece of tape from a mile away and may target you for trying to fool them. They will also know a camera make and model better than the guy/gal who sold it to you. They don't need to read it from a camera strap. Besides, how many cheap brands of DSLRs are there?

Go, enjoy your trip and post your images when you return.

I have never had a problem in three cruises with cameras. On two of them I took a high end point and shoot that worked out just as well as my big DSLR's and had no trouble carrying them in my pocket.

Try inserting your camera inside a large cow with the lens cap removed. Bring the cow with you (in the field, as it were) on your trip. Whenever you want to take a shot, just press the sides of the cow. With a little practice you will learn which side to press to change the aperture or shutter speed. And when the trip is over you can eat the cow, unless you and your family have grown too attached to it.

I do not like advertising Nikon on my straps. I have purchased over the years a lovely leather camera strap on EBay. No advertising.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Eibag-Genuine-Leather-DSLR-Camera-Strap-For-Canon-Nikon-Large-Dark-Brown-/161902567603?hash=item25b22520b3:g:2lAAAOSwf-VWW~Kl

Been to the Caribbean a number of times without any gear related problems. Most of the people you meet will be friendly and honest. Pay attention to your surroundings and heed the advice of tour guides, etc. Especially in urban areas. Just like most any place else on earth, if you don't use your head you can put your gear, and worse yet, yourself, in danger. Have insurance on your gear and make sure that your medical insurance covers you internationally. Some don't.

I think you have been provided with some pretty good advice --- Here is my 2 cents worth -- something I started doing years ago when we went on our 1st overseas trip --- I affix gaffers tape over all the Cameras & lenses logos -- I also got rid of the camera strap with all it 's brightly colored logos --- Can't say it's the only reason I have never had any of my stuff stolen -- But it does slow down if not stop all those conversations from folks that want to assure you that their Nikon / Sony / Whatever model is so much superior to your's
