How many people actually use a monopod on a regular basis? Do you find it useful? Convenient? Worth buying or bothering with?
I'm contemplating getting one for use while hiking around the mountains hereabouts but I'm just not convinced theyre worthwhile.
Any advice will appreciated.
I am very unsteady. With the monopod I brace myself against almost anything, a car, tree, sit on a guardrail, side of a hill or whatever.
I got a manfrotto 681B with the 234RC tilt mount about a year ago. Very satisfied! B&H for easy reference.
I use one a lot when shooting motor racing and birds.
It helps with managing the weight of heavy lenses on long shoots.
I do not use it so much for stability, a tripod is much better for that.
True, but it's easier hiking with a mono. I bring both to Yellowstone dependent on where I'm going on a given hike.

Think of it as a walking stick with a camera. iPhones have cameras, why not walking sticks?

I can't say I use mine regularly, but a monopod adds a noticeable amount of stability when shooting telephotos in situations where I can't use a tripod. Auditorium seating and sports events are the two most practical situations that come to mind. It depends on your shooting style, so only you can really decide.

You can also get hiking sticks with mounts for cameras. They have them on ebay. That is another way you could go.

What about ski poles?
I don't think ski poles have any way to mount a camera on them.

I'll bet Drwilk is thrilled with the responses on this one....
Well, some have been amusing. But not a great deal of help. I think you're the only person who actually says he uses one.

For a situation like shooting grandkids playing soccer with a 70-200 mounted on an 800E, a monopod is very useful.
I agree with most of the comments. I have a MePhoto monopod with an Oben ball head. About the heaviest lens I mount on is my Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 and I leave VR on. When I'm using my Tamron 150-600, it's stable enough to use without a monopod but, it's certainly heavy at about 10 pounds.
