the 2x converter will make any lens with 5.6f or higher manual focus on almost all canon cameras I actually ask canon tech. if I remember correctly you lose 2 f stops.

the shutter speed needs to be higher than the length of the lens in mm example 800mm lens needs 800 times 1.25 giving shutter speed of 1000 this does not include the crop factor if there is one this is considered a rule of thumb to avoid camera shake when hand holding. (and yes i do hand hold an 800mm lens when birding)

For white birds they really should be shooting in M if possible.
Most cameras will tend to overexpose and blow out the highlights and detail on white birds when shooting in any auto mode.
If M is not an option at the very least use exposure compensation to under expose by 2/3 of a stop or more, especially if lighting conditions are bright.

I second this. Also, keep your shutter above 1/1000 if possible.

I'm not sure if I agree with such a high shutter speed. I'm relatively new at digital photography and sometimes I experiment in manual and sometimes I let the camera decide what to do. Here is probably the best bird pic I've taken. I had it on auto, with matrix exposure rather than spot. At f5.6 the shutter speed was 1/320 sec. If it was much higher then that, I believe the pic would be way too underexposed, IMO.

if you can't comprehend the photography concept. then go off topic seems to be the tactic employed. That is easier than learning new photography methods and improving your ability as a photographer!

I have the canon 7d love the camera. the heavy duty body was the deciding factor for me. because the heavy glass i use. the bulk of your money should go toward good lenses bodies come and go lenses accumulate. ps if you buy the brand your friends have you can exchange lenses.

Try it. If you do not like the results you can have a pro do them. Maybe go test drive the new mustang or camero and get a couple of cool pics befor you take it back. The time you spend together is the most important part of the hole thing anyway.

you will probable keep what ever lens you get threw the next several camera bodies. a friend of mine was showing me a camera magazine with a camera that was $1700 it had 3.7 megapixels this was only 10 years ago the canon 70-200 2.8 has been around for years and are still a top selling lens just food for thought
