My son wants me to take his senior pictures. Have always loved taking pictures, but not sure i can even call myself an amatuer. Just enjoy trying to capture things i find interesting on camera. Flowers, animals, landscapes, anyways could use some advice. I have a Nikon d200 a 30mm1:1.4 and a Nikkor 18x70 that came with the camera.

Don't do something you both may regret.

When it comes to your own family with something so important, if you don't feel comfortable then refer he gets them done with a pro photographer.

The equipment you have and use isn't nearly as important as the vision you have for what you want to accomplish with the pictures.

Gather together some props and locations that are important to your son's life and story and take some pictures. You may take the first series and see in them what you really want and then take a second or third series that both you and he like.

If all goes wrong, you can still hire the job out. Even if that happens, you will have learned a lot.

Try it, You can always have it done by a pro. Your son thinks you can do it and if it works it will be a memory forever for you both. Did all 4 of my kids pictures, and they all like them.

I agree with everyone I have the same issue, somthing so important you don't want to make a mistake but like some have said try it and if it does not work hire a pro. I think I will take the same advice

One girl at my school literally took her own senior photo with a vanilla p&s camera, dressed it up with some border artwork in Photoshop and wound up with one of the coolest photos of her class. I think she even held the camera with her left hand, no tripod...

I say experiment - play around, break the "Senior Photo" mold.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. If I take his pictures we wil be able to get more of a variety of him with the things he likes to do and favorite places. And if they dont turn out the quality we are looking for, we still have time to have them done professionally. As you said if all else fails I have learned and hopefully will have had some fun with my son.Thank you for the feed back it is greatly appreciated.

If you have time, google images to look for manly poses. Or something similar. Just ideas.....

I took my oldest nephew's senior pictures last year. They were OK, but he loved them. I let him choose the poses and props. I had to remember that he took photograpy in high school so he knew everything. I wanted to remind him that took photography in the 8th grade with B&W film, darkroom, developing, etc. My point, is involve your son in setting up the shoot then your concern is the light and exposure.

I LIKE YOUR IMPUT. I SOMETIMES HAVE A HABIT OF NEEDING TO BE IN CONTROL. THESE ARE MY SONS SENIOR PICTURES NOT MINE. SO i WILL NEED TO REMEMBER THIS IS A GROUP EFFORT. BUT IN THE END HE IS THE ONE THAT NEEDS TO BE HAPPY WITH THE END RESULT. :) THANK YOU

Why not give it a go as was said earlier if he is not happy with what you do he can always go get them done by the pro.

I was typing out this story about taking my (almost) step daughters senior photos then realized it got off track! haha!

I know you can do it! It will be a great memory for the 2 of you and if they don't come out you can always get a pro later.
