I shoot a Canon XTi.
I looking to extend my reach without rendering too much quality! I shoot a lot of wildlife and it would be nice to zoom closer so as not to disturbing their environment.
I'm on a budget and not looking to spend a bundle so I was wondering about the quality of the 2X converters! Give me some tip's
Thanks

I have a Sigma and find it does a good job although you will lose just a bit of light.

======================================== And that brings a question to mind: If you lose a bit of light using one and using filters, wouldn't the auto bit kick in and compensate for that ???

Hi Sirsnapalot: Here is an abbreviated quote from Scott Kelby on teleconverters. "I only recommend the 1.4 teleconverter, because the quality doesn't change noticeably like it does with a 1.7x or a 2x." Then he goes on to say both Nikon and Canon make very good ones. He does warn that teleconverters don't work with every lens. I know my Canon 1.4 teleconverter will only work with my 70-200mm 2.8 L usm. I've tried using it with other lenses I have and it only works with that lens. Another option would be extension tubes, but I've never tried them. Hope this helps.

Yes, good question. The metering system does compensate for exposure but some focusing systems don't work well at smaller apertures. If you are using a lens which at 300mm is F5.6 and use a 2x TC you loose 2 stops, making the lens an f11 at the widest.

What lens are you planning to use it on?

Which is why the Nikons will only mount to the f/2.8 or better lenses. You can also get problems with the autofocus not working right when you get that low light.

In my experience , it depends, a couple of years ago I tested one of Nikon's 2x (older version) and wasn't happy with the results. Last year I tested the most recent version and was very happy with the results.

I use a kenko 2X it is cheap but it hooks up fine to my cannon T1i. I can't see any degradation in an 8X10 print but then again I can't afford expensive or that expensive glass everyone on the site talks about owning. I mainly use it with my old tamaron 28-200 that I bought for my old eos film camera. it even performs auto focus in good light. so if you are on a budget kenko may do the trick. i think i paid about $100 for it.

So it would not work with af-s nikkor 55-300mm f 4.5-5.6?

Was looking at trying one, to get a bit more reach, but if it will not work, time and money saved.
