Far from Arizona, but onthe same planet...I offer you.........

Those photos of making maple syrup remind me of my childhood in Minnesota. It was work then, but I wish I could do it again.

Very good work. This is what I love about living in California. There are so many different types of scenery, we are never for a lack of a great subject! California is a very diverse state.

Wow! What a great opportunity! Most people just dream of having this chance. What a fond memory you have.

It seems to me more and more photo enthusiasts are trying their hands at HDR and asking for comments. I've only commented to one individual and will refrain from doing so in the future as I believe most of these attempts at art are nothing short of disastrous. Good photos are turned into images worthy of nothing but the circular file. Out-of-focus photos are now stated to have been created using the Orton effect. Perhaps I'm an old stick in the mud but unless done properly HDR is a waste of everyone's time. By now you can see I am not a fan of HDR and am strongly in favor of natural photography. All that having been said and probably provoking many, I can support different art forms and believe expanding one's knowledge base is commendable but folks...HDR & Orton is not for me. What I'd like to see is a seperate section for HDR & Orton Effect added to this forum (like the macro section) so that when one opens a thread expecting to view realistic photos he/she is not confronted with cartoonish or garrish images. I'd like to know what others think about this and please don't nail me to the cross. I don't advocate not displaying the work of those that believe HDR & Orton are legitimite art forms, I would just like to have them in a collection where one can avoid them at will. Convince me I'm wrong...an old dog can learn new tricks but it may take a while.
It seems to me more and more photo enthusiasts are... (show quote)

Where is the "like" button? I agree with you, I have seen very few that have turned out to be good "art work". But if people are so inclined, let them do it. Just because I do not like most of the results does not mean others feel the same. I feel "each to his own".

Do not use anything that is not made for lens cleaning! Do not use your handkerchief or paper towels! Do not use paper not made for lens cleaning because it will scratch your lens, eye glasses too! Use a camel hair brush to remove dust and then use camera lens cleaning solutions and cloths or papers.

Alaskan, as usual your photography surpasses the very good mark! It is so realistic, I had to go get a jacket to finish looking at your photos. You are truly a master. Thanks for sharing.

I have been told that object extending to the corner of a picture, such as the wagon tongue in this picture from Bodie, are a "no-no". Any comments?

I think it is a "no-no" only if you yourself do not like it. I does not matter what others think unless they are buying it. I like it. To me it suggests that the wagon will be pulled out of the picture past me. Or that I will travel past the wagon on into the photo. If the whole tongue were in the photo, I would not have that feeling of expected movement. Good work. Thanks for sharing.

Well you may think this thread is idiotic, but I learned that the bar on the beach called Moe's in SC is owned by Elvis, Morrison and Orbetson. And after just a few you can see them on stage! Now that is good to know.....

A-F = Auto-Focus.
Aperture = variable diaphragm "window" built-in to every lens.
B&W = Black & White (film)
Bokeh = background blur (I hate this term!)
bpc - bits per channel (Photoshop)
Bracketing = A set (usually 3 or 5) of exposures identical in every respect except shutter speed. Most often separated by 1-stop or 2-stops. Used in making a single HDR imaging, or to assure proper exposure in a difficult photography situation.
Camera lens focal lengths are usually specified in millimeters (mm). When a photographic lens is set to "infinity", the distance between its rear nodal (focal) point and the sensor is the lens' focal length.
CC = Constructive Criticism
CCD = Charged-Couple Device = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charge-coupled_device = sensor inside SOME camera.
CCD vs CMOS = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor#CCD_vs_CMOS
CMOS = Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CMOS = sensor inside MANY cameras.
CoC = Circle of Confusion = In photography, used to determine the depth of field, the part of an image that is acceptably sharp. A standard value of CoC is often associated with each image format, but the most appropriate value depends on visual acuity, viewing conditions, and the amount of enlargement. Properly, this is the maximum permissible circle of confusion, the circle of confusion diameter limit, or the circle of confusion criterion, but is often informally called simply the circle of confusion.
CS1, CS2, ... CS5, CS5.5 = PhotoShop versions (CS6 is coming soon)
DOF = Depth of Field (area in focus within photo).
DPI - Dots Per Inch (printer reference)
DSLR = Digital Single Lens Reflex camera
f-stop = measurement of aperture opening, expressed as a (f)raction, such as f/16. The bigger the number = the smaller the aperture.
HDR = High Dynamic Range = A set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wide dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight, and is often captured by merging (with an HDR computer program)of multiple, differently exposed standard-dynamic-range digital images of same subject.
HHCC = Hard Hat Constructive Criticism (meaning, mostly criticism, and less constructive)
IMHO = In my honest opinion (meaning anything I said previously was not honest) or "humble opinion" (labeling self as humble?)
IMO = In my opinion
ISO (International Standards Organization) = old ASA (American Standards Association) = measurement of CCD or CMOS or film sensitivity to light. The higher the ISO = increased sensitivity to light (good) = increased noise (bad).
JMO = Just my opinion
LR, LR2, LR3 - LightRoom versions
MF = Manual focus
MFD = Minimum Focusing Distance (between lens front element to subject).
Noise = electronic aberrations (mis-fired pixels) occurring on CCD or CMOS sensor.
OCF = Off Camera Flash
OOF = Out of focus
P&S = Point & Shoot camera
Pixel = a single microscopic sensor, to capture light and color, within CCD or CMOS. A 12M sensor has 12-million pixels.
PP = Post Processing
PPI - Pixels Per Inch (CMOS sensor reference)
PSE1, PSE2,. . . = PhotoShop Elements - latest version 10
Reversing Ring = a ring that has camera body attachment mount on one side, and is threaded on the other, to mount on your lens where you normally mount your filter. A lens mounted in reverse position dramatically increases magnification, but loses all automated function. Manual focus and manual adjustment of both aperture & shutter speed are required.
Slave = off camera flash
SLR = (film) Single Lens Reflex camera
SOOC = SOTC = Straight out of (the) camera
VR (Nikon) = Vibration Reduction = IS (Canon) = Image Stabilization = VC (Tamron) = Vibration Control = OS (Sigma) = Optical Stabilization.
WD = Working Distance (between lens front element to subject).
A-F = Auto-Focus. br Aperture = variable diaphragm... (show quote)

OMG = I dropped my camera!

Does anyone have any advice on how to try to get a photo published? Where or what channels to go through?

Check the libraries and book stores for books on the subject. They will give you the names and contact information of agents. Study up on what they expect, make contact, show your work and let them do the marketing. This will free you up to shoot more photos. Most are in large cities ie New York, etc.
Good luck

Hello Alaskan,
I can just say "WOW"! ! ! Great work. Thanks for sharing. I know there are a lot of eagles up there in Alaska, but to be able to get that kind of photo is better than very good!
