Xmas is a common form of the word Christmas. ... The "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, which in English is "Christ". The "-mas" part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for Mass. It is not just an abbreviation.
High school teacher here. Andesbill is dead on. And today's students will not take off their earbuds and put away their phones long enough to learn anything. We get no support from administration because the parents get whatever they want and they want to call them all day during class. The state of Ohio has tied out hands regarding discipline by tying it to the standardized test scores. Discipline lowers your scores. Also, all the practical classes were done away with to fire teachers to pay for the tests. The tests are mandated, but not free. IMHO they prove nothing about the abilities of the students or the teachers.
Just checked out Ruggles' work. Thanks for the introduction to this photog.
I've tried it. It's good coffee but not worth the $20 a pound.
And how much hotter 80 degrees is.
I still have a NIkon F dated 1968. It has the most accurate meter I have ever used.
I have taught high school for 23 years and have seen it get progressively worse. I have never been screamed at and sworn at like the last
couple of years. Administrators just say "We don't know what they are going through at home" or " Maybe they didn't take their medication."
The state of Ohio has tied our hands by tying discipline to test scores. Suspensions and expulsions lower your state test scores, so of course
there are no consequences. These kids expect redress for every tiny little wrong.
Hilarious and true, including the additions from repleo.
I remember a 60 Minutes from decades ago with a man who did the same thing. This was way before checking
up on people with social media. He made judgments about you according to what job you held, the car you drove,
etc. The main thing I remember is that he said he would never put a banker on a jury if he could help it because they
know how to say no to people and don't buy sob stories and excuses. Interesting.
Try getting CDs from the library. The Michel Thomas Method is good for starting with simple phrases. On CD you can hear it over and over.
I teach high school and although we do not have darkroom photography anymore, I occasionally get donations from friends and the community and pass the equipment along to students who are truly interested.
These are some of the best shots I have seen on this forum.
Great collection. Thank you. I'll be taking these to school.
I went to the Gander in Columbus, Oh once and could have walked out with anything I wanted because there was no one working there. I am so tired of ALL corporations not hiring enough help and then blaming customers/internet/whatever for low sales. I can't tell you how many times I have left merchandise at the register and walked out of a store because there was no one there. We are supposed to beg to spend money there. Thanks for letting me get in my rant for the day!
