No wonder kids can't learn

Young people cannot learn from history anymore because history is no longer taught as a required subject in public high schools.

Theodore " Dutch " J. Van Kirk was the navigator on the "Enola Gay" when it dropped the bomb at Hiroshima , Japan, and is the last surviving member of the crew. This really happened.

Dutch was asked to speak at a grammar school this past week. The young teacher introduced him by saying the speaker was a veteran of World War Eleven (as in WW II). Dutch stood up and walked out of the school without saying a word. End of story.

I think we're on our own (wishing for God won't help us). It's not just a lack of learning history. Young people also aren't taught other really important information. Two of my favorites are critical thinking (logic, fallacies, advertising techniques, etc.) and finance (compounding interest, investment strategies, retirement needs). Most young people have NO IDEA how much money they need in a retirement portfolio; AND they don't know how to recognize propaganda! So, they are primed to be led like sheep and work their entire lives. Now if we had a school levy to teach those classes in high school it would have my vote!

Don't know where you got your history from but Dutch van Kirk died on July 28th, 2014.
This might have happened, but it wasn't last week.
He was a very humble man according to what I have read about him.
He was from Northumberland, PA which is about 18 miles from my home in Mifflinburg.

Shocking, but not unusual these days!
Thanks for the bad news.

Regarding the 'World War eleven' story, I wonder where the teacher was prepared to be a teacher ? The teacher education schools I am acquainted with have history class requirements. Plus, even a little common sense would prevent a 'World War eleven' reference.

Sadly, the quality of the education experience depends on finances. In my area (southern New England) the more affluent smaller towns offer top-notch schooling, while the larger cities’ schools endure continued cutbacks and physical plants that are crumbling. I am sure this is true all over America. I have family in two west coast states whose children attend excellent schools, while two friends’ families in the same states bemoan the quality of education in their respective communities, which are larger cities that are under financial duress.

The high school at which I taught for 30 years (retired for some time now) still teaches U.S. history, modern European history, African history world history, political science, etc. In addition to regular level classes, it offers advanced placement classes in many of these disciplines, as well as several levels of computer programming, robotics, physics, chemistry, and all levels of math up college level placement. Several foreign languages are offered, including Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, and Russian. Several other regional towns offer very similar experiences. Most have graduates attending colleges in the 75+% range, while the larger cities cannot come close to that statistic.

Lastly, as in all occupations, there are poor teachers and excellent teachers. Generally, the poorer ones don’t survive very long in better education environments, just as a poor lawyer usually doesn’t have a thriving law practice. What is more unfortunate is that often many quality teachers in communities in which education takes a back seat to everything else are eventually discouraged and leave teaching.

My grand daughter is a junior in high school - the history teacher was talking about the Salem Witch Trials and could not answer a question by another student as to what started the hysteria in the first place... She stepped up and explained that it was started by some teenage girls as a game and was challenged by the teacher - he didn't believe her... She had to pull the books out to prove it to the arrogant idiot... This is a prime example of the level of incompetence that is polluting the minds of our children today -

All we can do is work with our kids at home and get them interested in history, math, science, reading and writing...

The powers to be are being successful at their goal of dumbing down the masses - easier to control -

Take a hard look at the states that are cutting the funding for schools - too many - but again, back to their goal...

I once spoke to a young woman who had no idea when the War Between the States took place and who thought that we fought the British during WWII. She also believed that wool came from wooly mammoths. She was a product of the Los Vegas school system.

Another possibility - she didn't care to listen in class. I know some like that, but who knows.
Definitely nasty if the in depth history is not actually being taught anymore.

There are no more levels of expectation. This way no one has to excel at anything important. Functional illiteracy is the new norm.

In my area of Flordia, if it isn't part of the State Standards test, it isn't taught. The schools are graded on the student's scores and the higher the school grade the more money that school gets. It is just like everything else, money is the goal, not education.

It may not have happened last week but probably true. I bet that teacher COULD recite the socialist democrats' ideology or her union contract terms correctly though.

Six years ago my daughter graduated high school with a 3.84. She could do calculus in her head. She could not nalance a check book and had no idea what a resume or cover letter were. I feel they need to go back to teaching some real life skills in the school system instead of rocket science mathematics.
