You have two fine cameras, alas, two that overlap in such a way they are much the same camera. Both are pro-grade cameras, like most all interchangeable lens cameras now in the 21st century. Both are built to last through numerous years of relatively heavy use indoors and outdoors. Don't worry about any new camera bodies until one (or both) of these bodies develops a problem that is too expensive to bother with fixing.

If you can't ignore the GAS, try ignoring UHH until the urge passes.

Have the Sony RX 10iv in my hands and took it out for a spin yesterday…wow!
Here are a few of my first images. Thank you to so many folks who responded and encouraged me in my post about my trepidation for trading in my heavy telephoto lens for this little workhorse!

It is a great camera and you are putting it to good use.

Hello Everyone:

As I really have not been focused (hah, unintended pun) on new "point & shoot" cameras of late, as I tend to only use my old DSLR for my photography, I have a question I would like to hear opinions on:

I have a daughter who is going on an extended overseas trip to two different continents (South America and Asia), and I am hoping to get her a camera for that trip. A few caveats:

1. She is not a photographer by inclination.
2. She does take some occasional photos with her iPhone.
3. She needs to travel "light" so a basic, rectangular "point & shoot" would be her best bet to fit easily into a pocket to carry with her through her travels.

I would like her camera to be reasonably "durable" so that is she accidentally drops it, it may likely survive.
I would like it to be as functional as possible in low light situations.
I would like it to be reasonably fast to record images to whatever media it uses.

I tend to likely prefer Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, or Sony, but am open to other options.

I would like to spend somewhere in the $100 - $300 range.

What would you think would be good choices to look into?

Thank you for considering my request for guidance!

Pipe

I just came back from backpacking in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. In the past I have done Asia. Carrying a small camera is not a bad idea, however, if all she wants it four is a back up to her I Phone, then get her another phone. The second phone would serve as the back up camera, plus much more. She can use it for local Sim cards to both stay in touch, make local calls, and have access to cheap data, local internet. If her I-Phone was stolen or lost, she would have a back up (sadly a real possibility). These days not having a cellphone is almost as bad as not having a passport. I used T Mobile international plans and have found their International plans to be expensive and useless in many places where it was supposed to work. This is an unconventional idea that you might want to discuss with your daughter, or get her both. The back up phone doesn't need to be the best or brand new.

Happy and safe travels to your daughter.

Finally, Whatsapp is the new international telecommunications company. If she doesn't have it on her phone, she should install it.

Well I had my Merchants exhibit at City Hall in Brooksville florida . Now the curator wants me to do another photo show . Does anyone have a suggestion for a subject? A few local people have suggested People and their Pets. Or some people said mailboxes. the still others said portraits of older folks who have been together for a very long time. any suggestions from photographers here>?

What is your passion? What do you love to photograph? In there is the answer to you question. The other questions you should answer is who is your audience and what are their interest? What made your first exibit a success?

Make sure your computer ar tablet has the ability to read and write at the speeds that the hard drive offers. If not you are spending extra money for nothing. The drive will work but not at the speed your computer is capable of.

Now that you've confirmed you did in fact capture those images in a RAW format, return to your LR Import Dialog and review the settings you the human have specified as your import settings.

Make other corrections to your workflow and / or camera settings, as needed. Adjust those settings, if needed, based on the findings of your review of the folders and cards involved in this human-cased issue.

Yesterday I noticed that a subset of the photos I shot in RAW and imported into Lightroom Classic were converted to JPEG files. Just some of the photos, not all of them. I used LRC to import. I right-clicked on the folder I wanted to import to in the library module, and went from there. The usual import process (although the right click on the folder is a new trick for me). I hate the fact that I shoot in RAW and then I don't get the benefits of that for some photos. I noticed that the Denoise function in LRC doesn't work on JPEGs. Why does this happen, and more importantly how can I prevent it? Thanks for any thoughts.

Double check the dialog boxes before importing. You may have checked import as JPEG by accident. Go into both settings and preferences and make sure it is set up the way you want the program to perform.

Many u-tubers have been posing this theme lately ......but none talk about the possible replacement for the Sony RX10 - especially as it relates to wildlife/bird shooters ! - They think everyone wants to continue to drag around 600-800mm lenses !

Every one complains about size weight of lenses in this genere - they also complain that the one inch sensor is maybe not good enough.

So my wish for 2024 is a M4/3 based dedicated lens camera a-la RX10. This camera would have a 14-300mm f3.5-4.8 Zeiss zoom lens ( 28-600mm equiv. ) taking a 77mm filter at most and an in camera pixel enlargement option similar to Clear Image Zoom. I am thinking $2200 as a price point. Short of making the whole camera/lens together, it would be nice if someone ( Zeiss) would just make the 14-300 lens in an M4/3 mount for maybe $1700.

What are your thoughts/hopes for the new 2024 year ??

Sadly, my guess is that wishing for a new Sony Rx10 is a long shot in coming true. It is not in the company's interest to create a camera that needs few accessories, think lenses. Would I buy an updated one, yes in a heart beat. Beyond that, I do not need anything else to be created that would give me GAS! 🙂

Happy New Year to all!

Elements does not use your Lightroom catalog at all. If it isn't removed when you uninstall Lightroom you can just delete it since it would no longer be needed. You would not lose your pictures when you delete the catalog because your pictures aren't stored in the catalog.

Bad idea if he wants to keep his edits. All edits are stored in the Lightroom catalog.

Happy Wednesday

Seeking a program to select random pictures, copy each into a new folder, and arrange into a new sort order without changing their file name. Once into the new folder, arrange and into my selected sequence/order.

Your ideas pls.

Sounds like something that Lightroom is perfect for. Using collections you can arrange your pictures anyway you want with out creating new files on your computer, unless you need to. You can share collections directly from Lr. As long as you have imported the pictures into LR, you can pick and choose what to put in any collection or even make collection sets.

Have things really changed all that much since affordable instamatic cameras became available in the realm of picture taking? I do not think so. There are snap shot takers who've been around since cameras became affordable and serious photographers who give thought to what they are taking, professional or amateur. While instamatic cameras, with the the original "P" setting, were design to take mostly horizontal pictures, cellphone cameras are vertical as are their vertical viewing platform, the screen.

What has changed is that cellphone cameras have become the instamatic cameras of current day, a majority of the people have one and carry them practically 24/7 and many use them continuously. So not only has the proliferation of cameras led to more pictures but these same devices allow the sharing of pictures and video inmass like never before.

Of course, most cellphone cameras are far more sophisticated than instamatics are, allowing for their professional use, but the average person just shoots and post without a thought to composition, lighting... As much as things change, a lot has not.
