I have a rider on my homeowners policy which specifically lists my equipment. I believe it provides replacement value. I pay an additional amount for the rider. You will have to decide if the costs works for you. It does for me. I’ve never had a claim. The peace of mind is sublime.

I follow the basic procedures outlined here. It has successfully worked for me for 15 years.
Download the image files from the card to my computer. The originals go to a dedicated external HD. The files ate imported into Lightroom and stored on a second external HD. At this point I can format the card, which I do every time in the camera. Once I’m finished with my review and editing, I backup the second external to a third one. I also back up the second drive in the cloud.

There is some solid advice here. I feel the key point is to purchase used gear. All the cavers apply—buy from a solid dealer with a good reputation. Don’t overprocess. Take a look at what is out there and take the plunge. That’s what I did 53 years ago. It worked out fine.

Nikon FTN, 24 mm, 50mm, 85mm, 135mm and an old wood tripod I purchased at a photo studio closing in San Francisco in the late 1960’s.

I can understand your attraction to the Sony. I have been following their development. Clearly, their technology appears to be today's leader. But I recently moved to a mirrorless camera and selected the Canon EOS R. My reason, I have a very nice collection of lens that work well with the R. So actually, it was a relatively easy choice...at least for me. There is so much technology in these new cameras that I will never learn it all. And the new camera takes great pictures.

Good luck with your decision.

Do you have a link for the LR Help Manual?
If so, the information would be sincerely appreciated.

It’s really a personal choice. I shoot only raw. And that is the case for more than a decade. If you need or want a different format or reduced sized image you can always produce one. I use Lightroom to do my processing, distribution and storage. This combination works for me quit well.

No mirrorless for me.

I’m in the same situation as zooman 1. I recently made the switch from a 5D M II to an EOS R. Both are full frame—which I much prefer. That’s just a personal choice. The R works fine with all my old EF lenses. I’m loving learning the new camera.

I opted for the iPhone 11 over the Pro model. It wasn't worth the difference to me. I use the iPhone for snap shots. I use it when hiking and backpacking. It's always with me. It takes great pictures intended for posting, emails, small prints. For more "serious" tasks, I use my Canon EOS R with my legacy lenses. I have no regrets about my decision.

I have recently acquired the R as a replacement for my 5D MII. I'm "downsizing"! As much as I would love to get one (or two) of the new RF senses, I'm sticking with my EF lenses. They work fine. My "carrying weight" is reduced. And I'm enjoying photography again.

Excellent. Had one for my T2i. My grandson is now enjoying both. Great carrying around lens.

I have had multiple success upgrading MacBook Pros over the years. I use OWC components almost exclusively. They are very helpful. Their videos help too. They have any tools necessary. Back up and jump in.

I routinely reformat my new hard drives. So far, so good.

I use Peak Design and it has saved my neck, back. I place the camera in the small of my back. Where it's safe and leaves my hand free to maneuver freely. I have them for M43 and DSLR.

Well worth the reasonable price...

I use M Rock. I have two. They come with good straps. You can configure them in multiple ways. I have even got them set up to clip to D rings on my backpack. The chest harness setup works very well with two solid straps. They are worth checking out.
