My sister is looking for a new phone and has asked for my advice, so I am turning to my fellow hedgehoggers.

She likes using her phone as her camera, so camera quality is going to me her main criteria. She is only considering iPhones.

The iPhone 11 Pro is $400 more than the iPhone 11. It looks like the only difference in the camera is the Pro has an addition zoom lens. Is it worth the extra $400?

Go with the Iphone 11 Pro. The additional zoom lens is worth it. It will cover all her needs.

It’s not a zoom. The base model has a 13 and 26mm equivalent field of view and the Pro has an extra 52mm equivalent lens. At least the third lens will let her back off and get better head shots.

But no cell phone will beat a small point and shoot with a zoom.

For under $400, one can get a fairly decent pocket camera with an even better zoom than the phone camera. If it is worth buying the 11 Pro instead of the 11 will depend on how much she will actually be using the zoom feature on the Pro model.

You're right; Apple is calling it a telephoto, not a zoom lens. At 52mm equivalent, I would not consider it a telephoto lens.

I suggested that for $400 she could buy a point and shoot, but she doesn't want to have to carry a separate device.

The three lenses are all fixed/prime, if you will, but each one of them has the capability to be zoomed digitally. Only problem is that the image falls apart very quickly.

I am weighing up the difference between the 11 and the 11Pro myself. I did a side-by-side comparison between them in the Apple store. The extra zoom on the Pro is nice, but I found that the bokeh on the Pro was far superior to the basic 11. The display on the Pro is noticeably better too although they are both great.

The price difference between the 11 and the 11Pro is $300. The $400 difference you mention is between the 11 Pro MAX and the 11. The 11 Pro MAX is a much bigger phone. The 11Pro is actually very slightly smaller and lighter than the 11.

After comparing the two I have decided I will go for the 11Pro. The better bokeh for portraits (and selfies) is what clinched it for me.

I am just waiting to see if Santa Claus brings me one for Christmas. I have been a very good boy!!

I wouldn't pay extra on the phone for a better camera. But the 11 Pro has better screen than the 11.

You are correct about the price difference. I was pricing a 128 GB 11, but since the 11 Pro doesn't come in a 128 GB version, I was pricing the 256 GB model. But you are correct - the difference between the 64 GB or 256 GB versions is $300.

I have posted a number of photos taken with my 11 Pro. Although nowhere near the camera of my 6D, it is an impressive camera to have with me at all times. Here is one photo taken at a recent shoot.

When you consider the size of the sensor, it certainly is a telephoto...

That maybe true. Maybe. It is hard to get a dial tone on a point and shoot.

Yes- well worth the additional $$; she will not be disappointed

Considering a photograph like this will never likely be blown up beyond 5x7 or 8x10, what more does the average photographer want. I want one!

I just was in the Smoky Mountains with the I Phone 11 and my D850. I found that for a full week of shooting there was only one occasion that I would have used the telephoto lens of the 11 Pro. I did use the wide angle of the 11 frequently and it was amazing. I also found that the bokeh in portrait mode was fabulous.
