Is there anyone that has used the Canon 17-55mm 2.8 lens? If so, what are your thoughts?
It would be paired with a Canon 80d.

I bought one 10 years ago when I purchased my 50D and love the lens and I think you will too.

I have owned one for years; my most used lens. I purchased it to replace the 17-85 a bought with my first digital camera which was not a great lens. The 17-55 is sharp across the field, has good contrast and is well controlled for flare. The build quality is very good but not up to the standards of the L series lenses I own.

I don 't have the 17-55 but I do have the 17-40L lens and I love it.

I use this combination and it works very well. Be warned that the lens doesn't have a zoom lock and lens creep comes as standard. It's a nuisance but has no effect on I.Q.

The Canon 17-55 is quite dated now. Today, with objective testing, the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 contemporary leads the way in this focal range - I have been using one for several years now and can highly recommend it.

My favorite walk around combo. Bought the lens years ago to go with the newly announced 20d and have used it on every model since then. Took it apart a while back to clean the dust from inside the objective lens and find it as good as ever. It was soaked during a terrific rainstorm while photographing waterfalls on a boat trip out Milford Sound, NZ. Let it sit unused for several months before starting to use it again.

My brother lent me this lens and wanted it back (I didn’t ask to borrow, he suggested I try it because I had only kit lenses). I was really upset that he wanted it back-great lens.

I have the 17-85 and have found it to be a really great lens. Maybe I was just lucky and got one of the two or three in each production run that magically came together in just the right fashion. Wouldn't give it up. Conversely, in the days before autofocus and my first Canon, I was amazed at the quality of images captured on my Nikon FE 2 with a borrowed Nikkor 43-86 lens, and without any research into this lens' abysmal reputation, I ordered one. I truly believe that I could have made sharper images with a pinhole camera. Wouldn't have kept it long, but no one wanted to buy it. Finally traded it and all my Nikon stuff for an EOS 630 and a couple of lenses when a rather severe accident made autofocus a necessity for any hand held shooting.

I had one a few years ago I used on a 60D. It was my go-to lens, very sharp.

I love this lens, it has now become my walk around lens, sharp as a tack.
