I love the features of the Sony A73 III and an seriously considering buying one. I am a longtime Canon user and would prefer to stay in the Canon family for simplicity of standardized equipment and operation. My other choice would be the Canon R, but it doesn't match up to the Sony technology. Unless Canon reveals a new model soon, I am having trouble resisting, at this time, the Sony technology.

It would be interesting to read why you are so drawn to another camera. Will this Sony camera make you a better photographer?

Go for it if budget is not an issue. We only live once.Lots of features.
Despite its billing as a 'basic' model, the Sony a7 III is a supremely capable full frame camera. Though it doesn't have the most megapixels or shoot the fastest bursts, its well-judged mix of resolution, speed, features and price point make it an easy recommendation for all kinds of photographers and all kinds of photography.

Key Features:

24MP full frame BSI CMOS sensor
93% autofocus coverage (693 phase detection points, 425 for contrast detection)
Oversampled 4K/24p video taken from full width 6K (cropped-in 5K for 30p)
In-body image stabilization
10 fps continuous shooting
2.36M-dot OLED viewfinder, 0.78x magnification
AF joystick
Touchscreen
Larger, 'Z-type' battery (CIPA rated to 710 shots)
Dual SD memory card slots
USB 3.1 Type C

The Canon EOS RP is revolutionary because it's the world's least expensive full-frame mirrorless camera by a huge margin, and it's also the newest and the best regardless of price for what we shoot on mirrorless. ~ Ken Rockwel, 2019, https://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm

What could you possible think is so extraordinary in a Sony 24MP mirrorless body that would justify changing / ignoring either of Canon's two FF mirrorless offerings, with more EOS mirrorless bodies in the pending release queue?

I am a Sony fan. I get to know and play with almost brands of cameras since I teach Photography. I would agree with you on the technology end. But I'm sure there are plenty of N and C fans that would dis-agree with this opinion. I have played with the Canon R and not impressed as compared to the Sony a7Riii or a7Riv. I do have and use the Sigma MC-11 Canon to Sony adapter. It works great and works well with Canon Brand lenses as well as Sigma lenses. My suggestion is to rent one and see how it goes. Most people complain about the many menue items. It really isn't as bad as many complain about. Besides that, you can set up the Fn button to short cut the menue. Or set up the custom buttons to go directly to how you wish to set up the camera. Yes Canon has more choices for lenses, but not when you consider the lenses for the Canon R vs the Sony E mount. With all the adapters out there you can literally use any lens out there. PM me for my opinions to the A99ii, A7s, a7iii, a7Riii and the a6000. I own them all and considering the a7R iv in the new year. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I've used both and don't think there is a huge difference in performance in real world shooting at all. They are very similar in real use. I like the R better in the hand and the Canon colors ~slightly~ better so it's what I bought for myself.

That's a GREAT QUESTION - One I aways ask myself prior to any new camera purchase - Don't know what Canon camera you now own -- So is this a step up or to the side minus a mirror

Will a new camera make you a better photographer? I’m liking what I am hearing about Sony glass and the a7R4, but the results I’m getting with my current gear is pretty good and I would rather spend my money on training and photo travel, which, I believe, will make me a better photographer.

Both Canon and Nikon are playing catch up compared to Sony, Olympus, and Panasonic. If I were you, I would wait for the next generation mirrorless Canon camera and see if it met my needs at that time. If not, that would be the time to switch in my opinion.

Go Morning
I shot both Canon 5D Mark II, 5D Mark IV, Sony A7 II and Sony A7R III. If you have a lot of Canon Glass wait till February, when the new Canons arrive. Rumors have it that Canon manufacturing a camera body that will be a DSLR & Mirroless. All our lens would be compatible. If you purchase a Sigma MC 1, that will allow you to use lenses on Sony.

Sometimes change is good, new learning experiences/challenges, something different....if its within the budget, go for it especially if its your hobby or just a desire, besides, every one likes new toys....if its your profession stick with what's made you successful unless you think a change will improve it. As someone else said earlier, "you only live once" or is it you only die once, you live everyday, so enjoy.......

I would encourage you to give the Canon a try first. i recently purchased the Z7 partly because I am Long familiar with Nikon, I know their settings, I like the ergonomics and am Pleased with the images they make. You may find staying with the Canon family more to your liking. In the end it’s ultimately about the images you make so if you’re a long time Canon photographer I think you’re likely to be pleased with images from their new mirrorless cameras as well. All these differences in burst rate, auto focus etc. Btw manufacturers that reviews keep harping on are overstated, with some particular exceptions like BIF, for most photography IMO. So try them all and see for yourself!

Agreed. This morning's rumor news includes the headline: The Canon EOS Rs to Have 75 MP Sensor and Dual Card Slots

I have the Canon EOS RP and love it. Easy to use and many useful features without breaking the bank.
