only open the 1.4 to 1.8 or 2.0 ,it will help with the focus snd give a better picture when not shot wide open !

Nikon has 2 50mm 1.8 lenses the new version is more money . one is the 1.8d one is the 1.8g

It's better to have 1.4 and not need it than need 1.4 and not have it ! lenses are not their sharpest wide open ,with a 1.4 you can stop down to 1.8 and still have a fast lens.
