I have a canon 50D. I have just sold 2 lenses to upgrade to a new lens. I currently shoot with a 70 300 mm and now want to buy either a 150 500 sigma or a 100 400mm canon. I received 600.00 for two of my lenses that I sold and will put that money down towards the new lens. I am a hobby photographer who is also a daycare provider. How much different are the two lenses. I am willing to keep it on lay a way until paid off. The Canon 100 400 is 1500.00 and the sigma is 1000.00 A lot of money for a Daycare provider and single mom but want to have one of these lenses.

I have the Canon 100-400 and I love it! I do a lot of wildlife and it's excellent. It's very sharp. I've had it about 4 years now. I use it in the backyard taking pictures of the birds too.

Since I can't compare to anything else.....I think it's very easy and comfortable to use.

I owned that Sigma, and sold it 3 months later, everything was soft. Bought the 400mm "L", and could'nt be happier.

You mean zoom, not focus, right?

I had a Sigma 80-300mm with a push-pull zoom and prefer that to the rotating zoom on my Nikon 28-300. It was very easy to use.

Although I have a Nikon, a friend of mine uses the 100-400L lens primarily for wildlife photography, but also for landscape (Utah with its National Parks), and the lens is fantastic. If I'd known about the 100-400 lens when I bought my Nikon, I'd have been tempted to buy Canon. Another thing to consider, the 400mm will in actuality translate to 600mm unless you are shooting with a full frame (35mm) DSLR.
