I was thinking of the same lens. I wanted the full circular images. Thinking it would only be a "fun" lens, I could not justify the price. I opted for the Rokinon (a version of Samyang) 8mm. I am quite comfortable with manual, so that was no issue. The cost was $289. It is soft at f/3.5, but very sharp between f5.6 - f/11. I use it mainly for architexture. I set it to f/8, set the focus in between 10ft and infinity, and evreything is in focus from 10ft out. The fact that is 167 degrees instead of 180, lessens the whole "foot in the picture" problem

I am very happy with it. I bought it for fun, but recently sold a few images from it. Here is one, due to this forum's compression, it may not look that sharp, but it really is.

Thanks so much Pigpen. Always good to have new input and with a picture!

I have it. It was fun for a bit, but, didn't really fit with what I normally like to shoot. It just sits in my bag now....

A stunning self portrait. To bad it just sits idle in your camera bag.

To bad you couldn't make it John. It was a lot of fun. I have to miss most events that fall on a Saturday.

Well according to a review of the Samyang 8mm fisheye

"To date Samyang lenses don't feature any electronics so while you will be able to mount these lenses without an adapter you'll have to live without AF and a camera-controlled aperture. The Samyang 8mm f/3.5 is a dedicated full frame fisheye lens for APS-C DSLRs."

Also this the Samyang 8mm fisheye is F3.5 vs the Sigma at 2.8.

Also, "typical for fisheye lenses the field-of-view is immense - 180 degrees or to be precise: 167 degrees on Canon EOS APS-C DSLRs (1.6x crop rather than 1.5x )"

It is 8mm rather than 4.5mm and does not appear that it will give the full round circle with the image inside.
It appears to me that the Samyang is just a very WIDE angle lens.

I have been lusting for the "SIGMA 4.5mm F2.8 EX DC Circular Fish-eye Lens for Canon."
It also is made for other cameras as to, Nikon / Sony... maybe others too(?)

I've always wanted to create those kind of images with a round black circle and lines bent till they meat each other! Yes I know it has distortion, its a fish-eye...

Product Information~
Digitally optimized circular fisheye lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras with an APS-C size image sensor. This auto focus circular fisheye lens has an angle of view of 180 degrees in all directions. It is exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras with the APS-C size image sensor. When used in conjunction with digital SLRs with APS-C size image sensors, it produces circular image within the frame.

I've read lots of reviews on it. Its pretty much $899.00 anywhere here in the states. So not cheap, but not out of this world...
Does anyone here have it?
Are you happy with it?
Do you like it?
Did its novelty wear off in a week?

Anything you can share about it, I would appreciate.
Many thanks,
Randy

Sunday my Photo Group went to take pictures at an amazing old place here in Portland Oregon.
They practically invented the world of being green and recycling. It was a never ending treasure trove of images to be taken.
Check them out!

I have done a lot of research and the literature is confusing as to the better lens so I would like your opinions
a) EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens
or
b) Tokina
11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Canon APS-C DSLRs

I am concerned about the CA on the Tokina lens. Price differential is around $230 with the hood. Thank you all for your help.

Also, why don't they make that many extra wide and wide angle lenses for full frame sensors?

Hi, I was in your same place a few years ago.
I went with the 10-22 Canon EFs. It is one of my favorite lenses.

When I am deciding on a new lens, I like to see what others are doing with it.
I check out the Flickr site for that lens. Gives me a good idea of what I may hope to get.

I never used the Tokina, but have been very happy with my Canon 10-22.

Here is link to my own file of 10-22 images ~ Your millage however may vary ~

Beautiful image... I live here just outside of Portland and have wanted for years to take a north to south Oregon Coastal drive and photograph all the light houses. This shot makes me want to do it this year! Thanks for the reminder!

I have two Tamrac Expedition a 5 & a 9.
The 5 Wasn't big enough for everything, so I got the 9. It held everything at the time, but was 60Lbs. 2 bodies with Grips, 580EX II Flash, 100-400L , 10-22mm, 28-70mmL, 100mm Macro, 80-200mm 2.8L, Extension tubes, 70-300mm, special Filters, and other misc stuff. This is way to for me to ever take someplace. I mostly use it for storage and take out what I need. But it does hold a lot! Now I have extra lenses that don't even fit in it. The more space you have the more you will fill up, and then the more weight you will have to carry!

I bought one on Ebay for about $36.00. that holds two cameras, one on each side. So you could of course them put your camera on wither side. I always go out with 2 cameras mounted with lenses. Best Bang for the buck I've spent in a long time.

Hi~
I bought one of these on Ebay Last Summer. I absolutely love it! I have 2 40D's on it, one with a grip. I often have a 400mm 5.6 on one, and the 100-400mm on the other. I have had no problems at all.

It's quite simple, when you really know how to make important decisions:
Canon begins with "C", the third letter in the alphabet.
Nikon begins with "N", the fourteenth letter.
Three is an odd number, fourteen is even.
You have 2 hands, 2 legs, 2 eyes, 2 ears; all even numbers.
So, the clear choice is NIKON, yay!

"C" ~ Canon stands for Correct Camera
"N" ~ Nikon stands for No Good Camera.

Some one made a great point... to use both systems and see which one you really like. Make sure to get all the same lenses so you will be able to make the best comparisons.

I went with Canon, because my sister had some extra lenses she no longer used or wanted... ( Its good to have a big sister!)
