I need a recommendation on a heavy duty dual camera carrying harness. Is there one that can carry a heavy super telephoto without serious risk of breaking during the shoot and damaging the cameras? The only ones I have been able to find seem far too flimsy for the task.

Try Cotton Carrier.

http://www.cottoncarrier.com/

I carry two cameras and have found that it is quite comfortable. They have both Pro style (for heavier cameras and lens) and the "pro consumer" for us peons.

Explore their products, you might find what you need.

Let me know what you decide.

I use the OpTech double sling and carry a Sigma 50-500mm (Bigma) on a D7000 body on one side with a D90 and a 28-300mm Nikkor on the other, packs then nicely and its only about $35. If you want more "hold" they have the doube harness rig for about$40, it has a chest strap to keep the cameras in tighter to your body.

Thanks for the hints, everyone. I have already been on the websites you suggest, reading up on the products. Your personal testimony, however, is much more valuable than what the manufacturer says about his own product. I will be making a decision soon, based mostly on what you guys say. And, yes, I have a couple of lenses that weigh as much or more than the "Bigma."

Mt. Shooter, perhaps you could tell me about the performance of your Bigma. Its focal range fascinates me. My widest glass is the 28-300mm Canon L. It does not come close to the Bigma in range.

I use the Nikkor 28-300mm VR also, its mystandard lens on my D90. The Sigma 50-500mm is a wonderful optical achievement, its amazingly sharp from 50 all the way to 500. Many people have complained of front focusing issues and I did see a little of that from 400mm out when I got it, but the AF Fine Tune feature of my D7000 quickly corrected it and its been wonderful ever since. With a F4.5 to 6.3 rating it is a little bit of a light hog, but the OS system is wonderful and I have had no problems taking nice pics on overcast days. The AF isn't fast enough to use for sports action, but thats not what it was designed for in the first place, but it is very accurate and the lens does not continually search for focus even in low light. I have not had it for summer shooting yet but I am very much looking forward to taking it to Yellowstone come Spring. Mine was a refurb from B&H and I could not tell it from new except for a couple scuffs on the case, the lens was immaculate. So far, for the price, I am ecstatic with the quality of the lens and its shots.

MT: Thanks. You answered all my questions about the lens. I wonder if sometimes the professional reviews deliberately low ball the evaluation to protect the reputation of Canon and Nikon. For my personal use, however, it would have to be an outstanding sports shooter.

I use the cotton carrier. I hike all the time with it and ride a mountain bike with the camera on my chest. It works great. Cottoncarrier.com

My pleasure. Here to learn as well as help when I can. I don't shoot sports usually, mostly football games for the fun of it anymore, shot a lot of them back in the 80's though.

You're welcome. I don't have two cameras yet, so I haven't had the opportunity to try the side holsters.

The Op-Tech sling is my choice, I carry a Canon 7D with a 100-400 and a Canon 20D when attending Air Shows and it works great. I have had a 500mm Canon lens on the 7D and not had any issues with strength of the system. Here is a link.

Hi~
I bought one of these on Ebay Last Summer. I absolutely love it! I have 2 40D's on it, one with a grip. I often have a 400mm 5.6 on one, and the 100-400mm on the other. I have had no problems at all.

I am still using my old musical instrument strap. Nice and wide and does not carry any advertisement on it.
