I was wondering if anyone knew of a good heavy duty backpack for camera and gear. I usually carry my 7d and 50d, 70-200mm lens, 50mm and one other lens with me and need a good backpack. I have a Canon but I have had to sew it up a couple of times. Time to replace it!

Pretty much all things Lowepro are reasonably durable, backpack wise. Just watch the weather cover over the zippers. It can get caught, which is annoying.

I have to agree with PhotoArtsLA, its truly hard to beat the LowePro backpacks at any price. I have the original PhotoTrekker and its still in great condition after over 20 years of service, not as pretty as the new ones, but everything still works great!

I have a Kata Bumblebee that holds all of my gear and a laptop.

2 - Canon bodies
2 - speedlights and remote
1 - 70-200 2.8
1 - 300 2.8
1 - 17-40 L
1 - 28-200 Tamron
1 - GPS
2 - battery chargers and extra batteries
a tripod in the attached carrier

Total weight is 67 pounds and has a waist strap for extra comfort.
And I take it as a carry on when flying.

I use a Dakine backpack that I use to carry two bodies and three lenses along with extra batteries and filters. It has loops on the outside for attaching tripod or other items and enough pockets for misc. items. I'm very happy with it. It has a belt strap as well for long hikes but I have remove it for short day trips close to the car.

Take a look at Domke's backpack. Built like a tank. The big one is around $240

Holy Cow!! 67 pounds!! I don't want to go on a hike with you! ;)
My pack weights about 28 and it starts to get to me after about 2 hours of walking. You must be a young pup. I am an old fart! ;);)

Erv hes gonna have bad knees when he gets our age if he doesnt have a heart attack first. I have a Lowpro450 it has wheels so when i am in areas where rolling is a option I can roll it and give my back a break. I havent weighed it so I will not get scared but it is heavy.

Take a look at Crumpler C list Celebrity backpacks. These backpacks do not load from the rear facing away from your back, the main cover opens from the side which is against your back. The other very important thing about Crumpler celebrity backpacks is that they have a second flap that zips inside over your equipment giving secondary protection for your equipment. These backpacks come in 3 sizes, small, medium and large. I had a regular type backpack zipper failure a while ago and all of my camera gear smashed on the street breaking several lenses and damaging a camera. I would never buy another regular backpack again, the Crumpler backpacks are more then secure. The Crumpler backpacks are very expensive but they are worth every penny because of the extra protection they provide. I have the medium size and it holds 5 lenses, 2 camera bodies and a variety of accessories. The medium size sells for $460.00 but its worth every penny. The large size is very large and it will hold a lot of stuff. The backpack that failed was a Lowpro and to there credit Lowpro paid for all the repairs of my equipment. I would never buy another Lowpro backpack or any other rear covered backpack, I do not trust them.

I have a Lowepro 400AW flip side which carries all my camera needs, and the good thing about this bag you don,t need to take it off your back, there is no way anyone can get to your gear when your in a busy street.

Look into the Clik line. I have a Clik Elite and it can carry more than I'm willing to. Look for them on B&H, Adorama.

I have both LoePro and Think Tank and am happy with both. If you don't mind paying a little more the think tank line were designed by 4 photographers who travel a lot and have some great ideas designed into the bags and backpacks like weather covers etc.

When I really travel I take my Tamrac lots of pockets. ajustable deviders on the inside 2 pockets on the outside and if you wish you can hang stuff from the bottom of the bag like a tripod or other stuff. It also has room and a pocket for the computer. The one I have is a Tamrac adventure 9.
