I'm having a hard time deciding which DSLR to get.
I had an Olympus E-510 which was cute and took nice images, but I no longer have it. Now I'm between Canon and Nikon. I decided against Sony and Pentax...and wonder why. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
I have been a photographer since I was 17 years old and have used most every brand of camera. Just being rediculously indecisive now at age 58.

Thanks to all,! Steve 8-)

Here we go again :), Both camera brands (nikon/canon) are very good. since you do not have any lens already then you can make the decision this way. Either buy the brand your friends have so you can tryout their lens when you want to add or buy what the local camera store sells so you can go in and tryout the lens you want to buy. Third option join the local camera club make friends and see what most of them are shooting that way you can tryout and learn from them.

there is a search button above...put your question in there and you will find plenty of answers....that is if your coin has two heads.

It's quite simple, when you really know how to make important decisions:
Canon begins with "C", the third letter in the alphabet.
Nikon begins with "N", the fourteenth letter.
Three is an odd number, fourteen is even.
You have 2 hands, 2 legs, 2 eyes, 2 ears; all even numbers.
So, the clear choice is NIKON, yay!

Steven...this is a horrible introduction to the people here on the UHH. I realize this is your first post.
We are being sarcastic because this question has been asked a zillion (ok maybe only a million) times and truthfully it is a choice you will have to make yourself.
Dont let us scare you away...
Go get yourself a camera that feels good in your hands and that you can afford...Nikon people will like NIKONS..duh
Canon people will like CANONS..oh go figure.
I myself...well I have had both in the past and now use an Olympus. I doubt that helps you much.
AFter you get your new camera...take some pictures and come back and show us.

See what you did ERV...this post is all your fault.

Not only that, but you have one head and four limbs (two arms plus two legs), which is 14.

Seriously, though. You are buying a system, so look at your budget and the features you need or want, and which you think will grow with you. Both companies make excellent cameras and lenses.

I'll try again! Sorry :) I think the best thing to do is go find a local camera store. A REAL camera store!! Talk to the folks there. But take everything they say with a grain of salt too. My local store has sales people that are Canon folks. But they know Nikons too and help me out all the time. I started with Nikon because I worked in a camera store that sold them. Just liked the feel of Nikon over the rest. And the journey started. Your budget will have a lot to do with your choice too. Nikon and Canon are both pretty pricy when you start buying all the toys. But what isn't! You don't have to have the biggest and best camera to get started. I started with an old used Brownie. Look at the others too. But my Dad always told me to get the best you can afford, but save if you have to, to get the best.
So there you have it. Your are still in the same spot as you were before. But remember, Go look, go touch, they are all great cameras. One will jump out at you. It's just like buying a car. :)

For this reason, I think Canon is far superior.
