Here is some interesting "authorized" graffiti that is in a certain downtown alley. We saw this on our spring trip. Pretty interesting stuff, painted with permission of the city. John

If any of you have suggestions for a good wide angle lens for my Canon 7D, I would appreciate hearing them. If there have been some previous posts about wide angle lens, perhaps you could direct them to me. I will be going to FL in April and would like a wide angle lens for landscape shots. I have done some reading on wide angle lens, and it has been mentioned that for a "crop camera", such as mine, one doesn't get the full wide angle that a lens specifies. Thanks for your help.

Attached is not the usual straight on view of Mesa Arch in Canyonlands NP that I took last Look spring. Look at in the download and you will see the great detail on the far canyon wall about a quarter mile away. Shot with the 10-18 lens (at 10 mm) with a Canon 70d. The lens is light, small and silent in focusing, and reasonably priced. I'd buy another in a heartbeat, if something were to happen to this one.

Having lived in similar western country, and recalling well how the locals think, I'd say do whatever the hell you want in moving/shooting roadkill. The locals and others passing through on such roads know what goes on, so they won't care one whit that your are getting some good use out of otherwise going-to-waste roadkill. GO FOR IT!!

Thanks for asking this important question, as I too know that the inevitable crash will eventually happen . There are a bunch of knowledgeable folks out there, we need you to explain the recovery process. JBruce

Thanks for the postings of late. I lived in Billings for 25 years before moving away. It's been years since I was in Yellowstone Park during the winter where I saw many of the same types of sights. What a treat to revisit those wonderful memories. I love it.

If it's a train shoot, it's gotta be good, and you did an excellent job of it!!

Spectacular shot; one to be very proud of. I keep looking for a similar situation, but as of yet, the birds just don't cooperate. And hey, what's to hate in a photo of this quality!? JBruce

I loved the earlier post of the Golden Spike, where we were allowed an inside look. The monument was not open that day. Here are a few in season pictures. In my other life, my company manufactured a gooseneck trailer for this facility. It is used to transport used engine oil, which fuels these two locomotives. Thanks for looking.

Thanks wbchinook, Yeah, I posted the earlier pics, but limited myself to just the scenes seldom photographed. It is a very interesting place for a train buff, and should be on their bucket list. I had wanted to see it for many years, and was especially fortunate to get the inside photo ops. Thanks for adding to the subject. JBruce

Thanks to all who viewed and responded. Yes it was rather much of a treat to be up so close and personal with the staff and the equipment. They were employing college students, male and female to do the work. The girls were actually using toothbrushes and Q-tips to clean the small brass parts before polishing--classic 'government work' at it's best!! We spent over an hour just wandering throughout the shop and machine shop where I talked with the machinist who was rebuilding a throttle assembly. Overall, a rather neat experience. Later, we were in Zion, Canyon lands, Arches, and Bryce Canyon Parks. Again, we were amazed at the lack of other visitors which provided the maximum of photo ops--no human presence to spoil the scenic views, and no Asian invasion--yet!! I guess I should post some of those images to inspire folks to get their spring plans under way. We were alone at the famous Mesa Arch in Canyon Lands for more than 15 minutes when the light was about as good as it gets--FUN.

UHH posting

Hello fellow hoggers, time to be thinking about places to go and things to see. Last spring my wife and I visited the Golden Spike Nat. Historic Site west of Brigham City, Utah. As usual, when we travel, we like to go during the tourist off-season, which was certainly the case here last year on April 26. The site was not officially open yet, so after viewing the inside museum exhibits, the ranger suggested that since we had made the drive out to the site before the engines were running, they offered an extra attraction; if we wanted to see inside the engine house, we would be welcome there. I suspect it turned out to be far more interesting than the typical summer visit. The engines were partially disassembled and were being all polished and fancied up for the regular season visitors. We had the full run of the engine house and all the time we wanted to take photos. The superintendent was only a couple of days from compulsory retirement, so he was VERY liberal in what we were allowed to do. Here are a few of the many shots we took with Canon 60d and 70d. Thanks for looking and check out the downloads; C&C are always welcome.

According to Canon, the 70d will not support center point focusing less than f5.6. The 2x extender will effectively make a f5.6 lens into an f11. I'm experiencing that same issue with a Canon 1.4 extender with a 70d and 100-400 mk2 at 400 and f5.6. The 1.4x/400mm f5.6 combo will work with a 5d3 or the new 80d, however.
