If any of you have suggestions for a good wide angle lens for my Canon 7D, I would appreciate hearing them. If there have been some previous posts about wide angle lens, perhaps you could direct them to me. I will be going to FL in April and would like a wide angle lens for landscape shots. I have done some reading on wide angle lens, and it has been mentioned that for a "crop camera", such as mine, one doesn't get the full wide angle that a lens specifies. Thanks for your help.

I would agree with the crop issue but it is not complicated. I shoot a rebel T5i with a 10-22 so I am actually getting 16-35 which as fate would have it, is the most popular wide angle L lens for full frame Canons. I like my 10-22. It is sharp and is a f/3.5-4.5

I will add that it is not future proof. If you trade up to full frame this lens is APS-C only and will not mount on full frame body.

I went to "search" at the top of the page and typed in "wide angle lens" (which you could have done). I found a post by bcheary that had a link to a B&H post about wide angle lenses. bcheary's post is a couple years old but the referenced link for B&H was updated three months ago and covers more than just Canon. You will probably want to stick with the Canon lenses.

Before you spend $$, you might want to consider whether you really need an ultrawide lens for landscapes.

1. The put a lot of information on a sensor more information on the same size sensor generally results in a reduction of details
2. Extension distortion - foreground too large, background too small. Looks weird, but could be effective in some creative interpretations - you don't want it to be the only way to record a wide scene.
3. Volume anamorphosis - stuff at the corners and edges take on a very weird shape - round things become egg-shaped.
4. Ultrawide lenses provide a view inconsistent with our human vision and perception - old landscape painters did not use an ultrawide viewing device to compose their paintings - they merely moved their heads.

The better solution for landscape is a properly utilized longer lens without the characteristics of ultrawide lenses that can negatively impact image quality.

So, in addition to not having issues described in 1 through 4 above - you end up with a considerably larger image (in megapixels) which provides noticeably better image quality. Most of my landscapes are taken on my D800 using 45mm, 85mm, and longer lenses, even though I have very sharp lenses that go down to 14mm. Ultrawides have their place in landscape photography, but in my bag they are reserved for when I am in a tight situation and don't have the working distance to get the shot the way I like it without a very wide lens, or if I am going for a visual impact that is provided by extension distortion. I rarely use them to shoot distant, all-encompassing views.

Thank you all for taking the time to give me ideas about wide angle lenses. I appreciate it very much. I will read the reviews of those lens that were mentioned here, and I will read all the links that were given here (I have already bookmarked them). I have been taking care of my husband who is ill for over 1 1/2 years, so I haven't been on here as I used to be. This short time for me to get away is coming soon, and I didn't know where else to look for help with information on wide angle lenses. Thanks to EdJ0307 for reminding me that I could have searched for the topic myself.

The gold standard wide angle for a Canon crop sensor camera is the 10-22. It is a fantastic lens reportedly with "L" quality glass (because it is an EF-S lens they don't give that designation). The newer 10-18 is reportedly also very good at half the price.

You get a crop lens for a crop camera and a FF lens for a FF camera. When I have a D7100, I used the Tokina 11-16mm. After switching to FF, I got the Tokina 16-28mm - same range.

Also got the Robinson 14 ...have to focus and set f stop. But anything beyond 15 ft and set to infinity focus. All for 249-300$

A close work colleague has the 10-22 EFs and absolutely loves it. I've seen photos and would agree that it's a great lens for crop cameras. Can't go wrong with this one if you want to stay with crop factor lenses.

why must we complicate things? for wide angle , on a crop sensor I rely on a 16-80mm zoom. for full frame a 24-70mm zoom works for me. if I want to go to extremes, a 8mm or 5.8mm is the ticket.
