Good observations.
I believe that those buttons are programmable to your choice.
Page 6 of the manual for the lens explains how to use those buttons and their default settings for AF limits.

Thanks Architect, the first time I searched Canon support, it didn't show a manual, but now it does. Very useful. The "paper" that came with the lens was pretty much useless.
It turns out those 2 buttons perform the same function - they act as a focus lock. So almost like back button focus. When you press one, it locks the lens from autofocusing and can be enabled while pressing the shutter. And yes, they are programmable to other functions, but not separately.

Thanks again.

Has anyone got their RF 200-800mm yet?
If so how is it?
Just watched a couple of field reviews and it seems to be well received.
Come spring it should be a great wildlife option.

I just received my 200-800 a few days ago, but due to the holidays, haven't had much time with it yet. A few observations of mine:
1. It is big, but not overly heavy. It comes with a strap and the lugs are on the tripod collar.
2. Focusing is blazing fast, and locks pretty quickly.
3. With very little time with it, focusing at 800mm seems to have a bit of trouble always acquiring focus. If I find a high contrast edge, it locks and then refocuses quickly. There is no focus range switch on the lens.
4. It has a cool ring to adjust the zoom tension. Works really nice.
5. The tripod collar does not appear to be removable. It locks and swivels.
6. There are two non-labeled buttons between the tension and control ring. Can't find anything about them, even on Canon's site.
I will try to get a few shots in after Christmas and post here. I'm using the lens on a Canon R6 (Mk 1) body.

About 2 months ago I got a quote from these folks for a Canon GS9, $175. I sent it off, 3 weeks later they offer me $148. That camera was new, in the box, extra battery and a case. Not worth arguing about, so took their offer. 3 weeks ago I sent in my Nikon 300mm PF after receiving their offer of $515. Took them 8 days to advise me they had received the lens, and another 8 days to send me their offer: $355. Really?? 3 weeks for them to change their offer on a like new lens, with everything that came in the box, and the box as well. No explanation. I called, waited 15 minutes to talk to someone who had no reason, so I told them to return it.

I personally will never do business with them again. When the lens is returned, I will post it here for $500, then if there is no interest it will go to B&H, who presently have offered $515.

I totally agree. I had 2 incidents with them where the actual payout was less than the estimate. I stopped doing business with them and then tried MPB. I have sold at least 7 items to MPB during my transition from mirrored to mirrorless and never had one estimate decreased. In fact, MPB once UPGRADED my estimated condition and gave me more than the on line estimate. Never again KEH.

Hi, I have to video an event where multiple people will speak. The problem is they will be moving around a relatively small area in front of the seated guests, as they speak. I am thinking of using a high end security camera (4K) that has motion tracking on a tripod/table to record the speakers, and at the same time use a camcorder myself to record the talks from a different angle as the second angle/camera. Does anyone have experience with using a high end security camera or even a motorized light bulb security camera with 8MP resolution? These cameras are not expensive, under $500 but not sure what quality of video they take, and in general is this something that will work. Would appreciate any feedback and thoughts.

Hello,
I have some experience with this. I would caution against using any type of tracking camera or tracking gimbal to record a talk. I did this once and the constant tracking of the gimbal was really irritating. I would suggest using a cell phone or decent video camera and position it so you cover the whole area where the speakers will be moving in. Also be sure to use a wireless microphone. Listening to distant, echo-y speech is also irritating. Good luck.

I have an old farmhouse that sits unattended. The vandals are destroying it. The sheriff's office suggested I put in a security camera, but I have no electricity there. So I assume it will require a solar panel. What sort of inexpensive security camera could I put up (brand name, model, etc.) that I could use images from to prosecute the vandals? And where on earth could I put it that the vandals wouldn't simply steal the camera! Also, since there's no power there, how do I keep it running? And since I live thousands of miles away, how do I monitor it?

I believe you are fighting a losing battle here. I know of one brand, Eufy, that has cameras with a built in solar panel. You would have to check that it would record to an SD card in the camera. While some cameras have built in wifi, I don't think there are any that also have a router, firewall, and web service built in, which are necessary to get on the internet. Someone would have to stop by, retrieve the SD card and view the videos on a pc/tablet. This is a tough one.

So, my old laptop has died and I'd like to replace it. I'll admit right here that I'm completely computer illiterate, so any help would be much appreciated. To get started, I really don't have a lot of cash to spend, (perhaps around $500 ish). I realize that's not much for a top of the line machine, so I'm happy to look at used/refurbished, and I already have a few places in mind for getting one. My problem is that I really don't know what specs I should be looking for, such as speed, type of processor, OS, memory, brand, and anything else I may have missed. I really know next to nothing about this subject, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help, all the best, and hope you have a great day!
Ray.

Ray,
I do computer work for folks since I retired. Amazon has several new laptops around the $500 mark that have i7 level processors, 16gb of ram, and 500gb or 1TB hard disks. I also use Amazon's "Renewed" section to purchase PCs for customers with low budgets. I have never been disappointed with their refurbs. I'm installing a new PC for an elderly lady tomorrow from Amazon renewed - Dell tower, 16 gb, i7 processor, 500gb SSD drive that I got for $190. It works fine. I think you will be surprised at what level laptop you will be able to get for the $500 mark. PM me if you want to discuss further.

Hi folks, I just sold some equipment to mpb and they are ready to pay me for it but hereโ€™s my issue, they only want to pay me by transferring the funds to my banking account, they want my banking account number and routing number, I have bought things from them years ago, and it seems a lot of you folks like them and give them really good ratings, but do you feel itโ€™s ok to just give out that info with the way things Are nowadays, thanks for your input, topkat.

I think by now you've got the picture. Those here who started telling you to never give out your account info and run if the site doesn't use PayPal, just don't understand our banking system. It is completely safe to allow someone your account info to PAY YOU. When you are paying someone else, then 3rd party payers like PayPal make sense. Direct deposit has been around at least since the early 70's. Used by employers, government, and businesses.
You will get fair offers from MPB, they are one of the best. I've personally used them multiple times with very fair offers and pain free transactions. KEH, not so much.
Give them your banking info and get your $$$.

I have to agree with other here that tout MPB. I have had issues several times with KEH where they issue an estimate and after you send the equipment in, they lower the offer. I am very accurate with my grading, and MPB has never dropped on their bid after getting equipment from me. Also, MPB is usually higher by a small amount than B&H. And their customer service, paid shipping and tracking is superb.

Very nice first posts. Keep them coming. The first picture the hawk looks as interested in you as you are in him.

Jimmy, I believe the first one is one of the babies - the other is mom or dad. The family had dinner on my garage roof last night - had to clean up rabbit bones today. . .

While I've been a long time lurker and learner here, I've never posted much except comments. Just went out with a new lens the other day, Canon RF 600mm f11 on my EOS RP. We recently hosted a family of hawks in a large pine next to our property and thought I'd give it a try. These were handheld, and I set the ISO at 1600 and used shutter speed to get exposure. A neighbor who shoots bird pics for some calendar publisher was there with his Canon 500mm f5.6 and 1-series body, tripod and gimbal head. We compared shots, and he was surprised how close our pics were. Had I hit focus a bit better, you might not have been able to tell which combo took them. Here are two of mine that I thought were pretty good for handheld. Comments welcome.

And some third party apps really make it look and work like Win 7. I just hate that page full of small windows that started with Win 8. Give me menus and/or desktop icons any day.

Windows 10 does not natively come with that Win 8 start up screen. I've seen some people end up with it, but I believe it is a setting in Settings/Personalization that causes it. You should be able to get back to the native Win 10 screen which is what you want - desktop icons and menus.

Whatever you decide, do no listen to the advice above to use Windows 7, especially do not replace Windows 10 with 7. 7 is no longer supported and 10 is just fine. Some relearning but only where certain functions are located. If you are in So. California, PM me - I have several refurbished PC's with Windows 10 that would run PS.

Thanks in advance

Agree with Acronis no longer the best. Try EaseUS Todo Backup. Free version does most stuff including system images. Paid version is cheap ($30 on special offer, sometimes $20). Macrium is good too, but EaseUS is easiest and very capable. I've tried over 10 backup softwares for my customers and this is the one I'm recommending for now.
