I am considering having some well-toned black and white photos printed by a service that prints on canvas and wraps the canvas around the frame. I would appreciate responses from anyone having done this and their thoughts on the quality and value of the product. I would like to obtain names of printers you would recommend and those you wouldn't. I am particularly concerned about a canvas print's ability to render contrast, saturation and detail. Thanks to all those who choose to reply.

We have used "Fine Art America" and been very pleased with the results.

Sorry but nothing beats the thrill of seeing the image appear on an 8x10 b/w print in the developing tray under a red safe-light.

Crashes of Telsa vehicles using their "Auto-Pilot' software have been in the news again lately and I am wondering how others feel about sharing our roads and highways with software driven vehicles. While I realize that the manufacturer says that the software is meant to reduce accidents and the percentage of crashes is still rather low, they are obviously not without errors. All in all, I find this "Auto-Pilot" trend to be a rather disturbing and I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the use of auto-pilot on our roads and highways at all. Sure human drivers make mistakes as well, but these computer driven vehicles can only do what they are programmed to do and I think it is impossible to write software that covers every possible scenario they may encounter. Anyway, is this really the wave of the future or is it possibly a misguided trend? Is the development of this kind of "Artificial Intelligence" really important enough to test it's use on our public roads and highways?

In any case, what are the laws that govern the use of this type of software and shouldn't we take a hard look at how we intend to proceed or not to proceed with this type of development before it goes much further? At least in my State, the operator of any motor vehicle must have a valid Operator's license, which requires at least some testing, etc. Do these computers have a license to operate in this manner or is just having a licensed operator on board enough to qualify, even if the licensed operator is paying no attention whatsoever? Frankly, there are enough technology distractions for drivers already and having auto-pilot available and by it's very nature and intent only encourages drivers to pay even less attention to the operation of their vehicle. I for one don't see how this is a good thing for all involved and I look forward to your responses on the subject. Good luck and good shooting to all.

I suggest you stop using CF cards, move to SD cards - eventually the contacts in the mini USB 3 jack will screw up and you'll be sending the camera back to Nikon to replace it. I have never been a fan of using the USB cable for anything other than tethered shooting with proper cable stress support. The thought of plugging and unplugging the USB cable at the camera end would keep me up at night - and sends shivers down my spine just thinking about it. Well, maybe I am being a little dramatic, but I was so glad when Nikon adopted SD cards I tossed all of my CF cards and bought all SD.

The life expectancy of a mini USB socket is a minimum of 5000 cycles and much more if used carefully.

Can anyone tell me about a DRY BOX / Cabinet for your cameras and lenses.
Do any of you use them?
What would require using them?
What is a good brand?

Any and all information would be appreciated.
Thanks

Desiccant cartridges in any small reasonably air tight enclosure will work. just recycle the desiccant in an oven every couple of months.

I recently presented a beginners workshop on photography, stressing only very basic fundamentals such as light, subject and some composition pointers. I'd like to follow-up by sending them some links to very basic editing tools that are free and easy to use for beginners who are most likely to shoot jpg only. Any suggestions? I started editing my photos with Picasa years years ago then transitioned to the more sophisticated (and difficult to learn) Lightroom. It's not for beginners.

I agree with Linda, Faststone is very good for beginners, I would recommend "Gimp" as a more advanced free software.

That's where the old depth of field scale on lenses was so handy, you could determine what would be in focus.

Just wondering if anyone here currently has or has had a Pentax SLR and if you have any thoughts about their cameras. Any thoughts regarding the about to be introduced APS-C camera?

I've been a fan of Pentax cameras ever since seeing David Hemmings in 'Blowup' way back in the sixties.

I keep encountering advice to shoot during the blue & golden hours, and I can see how that advice would pay off for color shots. I haven't shot B&W for about a half century, so I'm not clear: would that advice hold true for B&W shooting? Or would it just result in lots of blown whites and/or blocked up blacks?

Yes it does hold true for B/W. Its not just about the color its also the lowness of the light source in the sky, it reveals very interesting textures.

I always download via the USB cable, takes a little longer but avoids the possibility of damaging the SD card socket. You see a lot of used cameras for sale with damaged card slots or bent pins.
