I am considering having some well-toned black and white photos printed by a service that prints on canvas and wraps the canvas around the frame. I would appreciate responses from anyone having done this and their thoughts on the quality and value of the product. I would like to obtain names of printers you would recommend and those you wouldn't. I am particularly concerned about a canvas print's ability to render contrast, saturation and detail. Thanks to all those who choose to reply.

I use Easy Canvas Prints. They have done an outstanding job for me for over three years now. But only in color if that matters. I don't do B&W.

I've had good experiences with Canvas On Demand. One suggestion though. Sign up for their emails before using them. You will get emails offering steep discounts. Sometimes 80% off.

I've used three sources over the years, but the best far and away was Artsy Couture. Their finished product with it's excellent corners, fully covered backs, and often with hanging hardware preinstalled has always been topnotch. Some helpful online tools too. And they will do both 3/4 inch and 1.5 inch thicknesses on the frames. And, if not totally happy, they will do a redo for you free of charge. They also do gallery blocks which is a nice option other than canvas.

I would invite you to give Easy Canvas Prints a try. 16x20 less than $20. I just had a 33x43 (outside frame) color print with a wood frame (additional fee) printed for $159.00. It is very nice. Wrap around is standard on the base price with a selection of different frames, optional. At these prices, I am really questioning my own printing price tag, particularly on the larger print sizes, considering framing etc.

I have been very happy with mpix.com. You can see their canvas wraps at https://www.mpix.com/products/homedecor/gallerywraps .

I mostly use Costco for canvas prints, but occasionally I have my website to one and I have used a company in Ohio (I think) called Pro Prints. All of them are good. They do the wrapped sides differently. Costco will simply take the entire image, wrapping 1.5" around the edge. That means you lose part of your image to the edge. My website (FAA) creates a mirrored section to do the wrap, so the entire original image is on the front. I like that. And I have done that with some I print through Costco. I have never done a B&W on canvas, so I cannot answer to your questions about tone and saturation. The one I had done by Pro Prints is a bit over saturated. My Costco prints are not because I check the box that indicates they should print as is. I find FAA's prints to be very accurate in that regard. There is a tiny loss of detail because of the nature of canvas. When looking from normal viewing distance, I find this loss to be minimal. And, I have found that images that are a tiny bit soft actually look fine printed on canvas.

I'll leave you to choose from all the recommendations, but the one thing I didn't see posted is any thoughts on the post processing before you send it for printing.

Keep in mind that the wrap around the frame is real estate from your print, so don't be tight on cropping if you want the full image on top of the frame. Calculate the wrap in the processing of your photo especially if you're doing a series. I did a set of three to hang next to each other and figured out there was a 1" wrap on the frame (1/2" on each side). I cropped the 3 prints to accommodate and couldn't be happier how they came out.

I have all my printing done at Printique, Adorama's affiliate, in NYC. Top quality in metal, canvas, paper, etc. printing, outstanding service and fair pricing. A very trustworthy operation.

We have used "Fine Art America" and been very pleased with the results.
