I went the DIY route a couple of years ago for the quirt, charge batteries going down the road convenience. It’s heavy and cumbersome. I realize you’d prefer to save some money and build your own but I have scrapped the DIY devices and use a Honda 2000i generator for when noise is not an issue and a Jackery 1000 for everything else. Both work beautifully and will produce “clean” power to the electronics.

Super Duper cloning software currently does not have an update/fix to align with Big Sur to enable hard drive backups. With no indication of resolution forthcoming, has anyone found an alternative that has a bootable function and the option for selective choice of files to backup for MACs?

What a coincidence. I just ran into this issue as well and as wjones states, Carbon Copy Cloner has gotten around the issue for now at least. It's a result of Apple's security methods and APPEARs as though Apple will have to make some changes to their system for bootable cloning as we know it may longer be possible. That said, I was able to make a backup of the Data portion of my drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. It's a bit of a pain but it was successful.

Just intrigued to find out what we do use our DSLR/MILC cameras for? (don't count the "I wonder what this button does?" occasions when you accidentally find yourself with a video file)

I'll begin the survey with my "stats" - here they are:

Photography 100% Videography 0%

I probably use my Olympus E-1X and E-M1 about 40% video and 60% stills

I'm a huge fan of Photosync (https://www.photosync-app.com/home.html). I've used it for years and not one single issue. It's one of those very reliable apps you can count on. I highly recommend it.

When you ask if pro show gold runs well on my laptop I am not sure how to answer that. I have not used that program for a long time. There have been several upgrades to that program but my computer will run the program but as I said the computer is painfully slow which for an i7 quad core I don't understand. Also, the graphics card is a GT610M which is dated.
If I do get a new laptop I think I have narrowed it down to an ASUS ROG strix III G 15.6" or and ROG SCAR II 15.6". I was initially considering the ASUS ROG strix III 17.3" but figured I will the the smaller computer and get a non gaming monitor. I would have to get an external DVDdrive so I can load Office Pro on the laptop that is currently on my current laptop.

I’ve read through most of this thread and my suggestion would be to go with the new 16” MacBook Pro (of course it’s above your budget) and switch to FotoMagico (https://boinx.com/fotomagico/ ) on the Mac. I’ve used it very successfully for years. The you can eliminate the Windows machine, unless of course you need it for other uses.

I totally agree, Tony's value is highly overrated. I've felt like his channel has been self serving for a long time.

My Corel VideoStudio X10 is working well for me--Windows 10. Do any Hoggers have a recommendation for a similar software package that is designed for Apple?

I like Davinci Resolve 15. It’s free and works well on the Mac. It does however have a learning curve and may be overkill for what you are needing. It is a very powerful app and some would say on the level of Final Cut and Primere Pro but free.

[quote=VTdude]Hi,
I have a number of drones (one of which is a Mavic 2 Pro) and I’ll soon be 68. They are great tools for getting a different perspective as you state. I have always lusted after a Hasselblad, now I have one, a small one but a Hasselblad none the less. :-). It’s a great tool to have along on shoots.

Need a reliable SD card backup system for photos on our upcoming trip to Egypt, Jordan and Israel, without needing to take a laptop or tablet. Seems like the WD My Passport Wireless Pro is what a lot of people use, but it has very mixed reviews. Is that still the best option for backing up direct from camera? Camera WiFi to the cloud is also a possibility, but is pretty slow.

While not inexpensive, I use the Lacie DJI BOSS. No WiFi, just all hardwired to about any portable device if needed. It has 2 TB of storage and when connected to a phone or tablet you can review and edit images. I also have the RavPower Wifi device that others have mentioned and it’s quite handy as well.

While pricey, as mentioned previously, the Lacie DJI Copilot BOSS now does let you connect via the USB-C to the 2018 iPad Pro and it works great. I carry it everywhere I go when shooting.

I couldn't find anything recent in the archives on free video editing software so I'll ask again here. I have shot a few videos shot with the D850 and would like to do some editing on them. Is there something out there that works for free? (spent all my $$ on the 850). I mainly want to trim off some of the end video.

Have you considered Davinci Resolve? They have a free version and it’s Mac and Windows. I’m in the process of learning it so I can move away from Premiere Pro.

I second the DJI Lacie BOSS. It’s a great device, compact with lots of capacity and simple straightforward function.

I second the recommendation of the Lacie BOSS. I think it’s about $350 at B & H. A bit pricey but it solves your dilemma.

Have you considered the MIOPS camera trigger. It’s a little cheaper ($220). I just started using it successfully with hummingbirds. It has many different modes. I’m using the Laser mode for the hummingbirds.

Yes, lensrentals.com is a great outfit. I have used them for about 8 years. For Nikon and Olympus M4/3 gear. Never an issue and pleasant to deal with. I have also purchased some lenses and cameras from them. It’s a very simple and streamlined way to try before you buy.
