I couldn't find anything recent in the archives on free video editing software so I'll ask again here. I have shot a few videos shot with the D850 and would like to do some editing on them. Is there something out there that works for free? (spent all my $$ on the 850). I mainly want to trim off some of the end video.

Mac users get the most excellent iMovie 10.1.x FREE with every new Mac. I used it for years to produce training shows, wedding videos, lifetime retrospective award videos, and more. Nearly all of its commands and features have the same function in Apple's much more powerful professional editor, Final Cut Pro 10.4, so if you catch the editing bug, all your knowledge transfers.

Are you Windows or on a MAC?

Microsoft Moviemaker came with with my computer.
Not sure if it's free though.
Works for trimming the ends.
I use Adobe Premiere.

Excellent overview of the tools on both platforms, but they left out iMovie, which is ubiquitous for Mac users.

If you're thinking about Premiere Pro on a Mac, try Final Cut Pro, first, unless you collaborate with PC users. Final Cut on the Mac is faster than Premiere Pro on either platform, using lesser hardware.

If you have a Max iMovie would really work for you. It comes with the Mac.

If you get serious Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere are the big ones.

May I suggest you look at the video editing capabilities inherent in your camera and see if the solution lies there? Though I am not familiar with the D810, I feel sure it has some in-built basic video editing capabilities as does my lowly D7200.

Windows has a decent movie editor. It used to be called MovieMaker. Now they cleverly changed the name to Photos, not to be confused with Google's Photos or Apple's Photos. How could they think that "Photos" was a better name than MovieMaker?

In Windows 10, select the video clip and open the video file with Photos. There is a trim function that will allow one to remove content at both ends. I also use this app for simple cropping and light adjustments for stills. However, for nearly all of my video editing I choose Premier Elements.

Have you considered Davinci Resolve? They have a free version and it’s Mac and Windows. I’m in the process of learning it so I can move away from Premiere Pro.
