I couldn't find anything recent in the archives on free video editing software so I'll ask again here. I have shot a few videos shot with the D850 and would like to do some editing on them. Is there something out there that works for free? (spent all my $$ on the 850). I mainly want to trim off some of the end video.
Tom

I use NCH Videopad video editor, not bad for a freebie

If you have Photoshop CC for your still shots it will do extensive video editing, including applying all of the filters you usually use on still photos.

Search "open source video editing software", the first page will give you plenty of options, from the easiest, and most basic tools, to semi professional software packages.

Please replace D810 wit D850 in last post

A little late now, but you have up to an hour to edit your own post.
That option shows up near your name.
Cheers!

I would concur with "ncralph"... that you should consider Black Magic Design's... Davinci Resolve 15. This is a very powerful package that competes with Adobe's Premiere Pro and has all the features of modifying and correcting video... to build video show output. They have a free version with most the features... but also a "at cost" version with extended features... if you want to expand. However, like Premiere Pro it will take a considerable investment in learning the tools, but you will have a lot of capability provided to you to do almost anything with your videos. I've invested most my time with Premiere Pro and it is difficult to relearn another product... but depending upon Adobe's future pricing... I will definitely consider Davinci Resolve in the future. Check out at blackmagicdesign.com.

I'm a fanboy for Premiere Elements. Its competitors in the under $100 class include Cyberlink PowerDirector and Vegas Movie Studio.

Another respected free editor is Hitfilm Express.

If you have Lightroom Classic CC, you can trim video clips. You can also combine trimmed video clips together to make a "movie" by using the Slideshow module.

+1 for Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve v15. There's a $1000 version and a free version.
Also try Lightworks at lwks.com. Also pro level, comprehensive, transparent, and free.
Use both pretty much daily, right alongside the regular Avid, Premiere Pro, Final Cut software.

Lightworks used to be just about the only pro-level NLE in town, way back in the Hitchcock and D/Vision days before Avid, and before Apple bought Radius edit and made it into Final Cut Pro. It went away, then came back as free software a few years ago.

Both Lightworks and Resolve will work on any platform.

Lightworks has the edge on smaller systems, though - IMO it will run on just about any computer, whereas Resolve takes more of a latest-desktop-level computer to run smoothly, like most of the other commercially-available programs, especially from Adobe.

Ask more questions if you feel the need - I edit films and TV all day long, and have done so for decades.

Have you looked at or tried Rush with its cloud storage, edit on any device (except Android) concept?

Yes, Rush is okay to use for basic editing.

In the future -- nearer than we think and probably with Apple leading the way -- video editing will be apps on smart phones, with the presently-combined functions of ingest, edit, color, effects, graphics and audio probably in separate apps - and everything tied to our phone bills, or on a monthly subscription basis.

Me, I'm old school and against paying a monthly fee for what I used to be able to buy and own, instead of just rent or lease.

Hence my leaning towards products like Resolve or Lightworks, which are fully professional and fully-featured products, just without the monthly (or any other purchase) fee.

The others? They're either selling, up-selling, or leading towards one or the other.

In principle, I believe that they are the ones who should be working for my buck, not the way they want it, which is to have me working for my buck and then paying them for it.

That's what Rush is now. This first version relies on iPhones and iPads for initial shooting. Then you can edit on those or, optionally, on a PC or Mac. Rush apps for all, except Android for now. Because all the Rush loaded devices you have are synced to servers, edits on the iPhone are reflected on the PC or Mac. Importing with wires or cards not necessary unless you use a "real" camera.

I don't think Rush is aimed at movie and TV producers. Although there is an MP4 output choice, Rush seems to aim at links to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Yes, agreed.
I'm not too sure about the advisability of all that Nikon footage going up into a cloud first though. Isn't the D850 a "real" camera, though? Oh, yes, it has Snapbridge, right? So a "fake camera", after all... :-)

MS Movie Maker 2012 is no longer supported. However there is an active Facebook Group that discusses and posts videos from Movie Maker. Below, I pasted a link on where to download it. I hope it comes through ok. I have never downloaded from this site - I kept the install files from previous PCs. The program is free, and can do quite a bit. I generally use Premiere Elements 2019 for my prime editing, but often finish up with MM 2012.

The post was created by one of the groups administrators and is a sticky post at the top of the group. FWIW

I'm from the Linux world, though I also own Win10 and use a few apps there as well. The program I almost always use is Kdenlive, which does have a beta Windows port (I have Not tried the port).

It is a fairly nice program with features probably similar to all others. I use it all the time when recording lectures at home for my chemistry classes. It works well and has the transitions I like to use (fading in/out) and well as many, many more.

Learning curve? Yes, like any other. Decent help? Also a yes.

HTH,

Kenward

My 16 year old granddaughter got a Nikon D3400 for her birthday last year. She had Snapbridge connected and working BEFORE she took either of the two lenses out of the box.
