I never heard of any of the reputable companies pulling a scam like this. This whole scenario sounds strange to me. If you can't name the company then there is no relevance to your claim.

I had the same issue updating WIN10 today. The screen went black and all I had was the cursor with no hard drive activity. I tried to turn it off manually using the power button but it would not shut down. I must have held the button for 20 seconds. Then suddenly my sign in screen appeared and I signed in successfully. The robocaller industry is most likely contributing to legislators bank accounts. There should be laws to make selling customer phone numbers by corporations that we have to do business with illegal.

I would call my credit card company and dispute the order and have them issue a new credit card with new number.
