I've used Meridian Pro Imaging for two years -- their web address is meridianpro.com. I used to print all my photo books at home and then get them binded, but ink was too expensive.
I do mine a bit differently since hardcovers are so expensive. I create a blank page and design my own cover. I do the same thing for the other photo pages. That way you can design it any way you want with text and multiple pictures.
Get it binded with a clear plastic cover and a black back. I use the 8x10 format. An 8x10 photo costs only $1.49 a picture. That's at least $1 per page cheaper than anywhere else. I usually do 30 pages. Shipping and handling costs $6, so the total comes out to $50.
You have to download the Roes software, which is free and easy to use. You just import your pictures and drag them into a box. It usually takes about five days to get your order. They're printed on Kodak endura paper, which is a fairly thick paper and easy to turn. The pictures are also lab corrected for color unless you don't want that.
By comparison if you were to order an 8x10 hardcover from Meridian it would cost $120 for 15 sides with pictures on both sides. That's $70 more than if you ordered the same number of pages and got it binded. I would highly recommend Meridan because of the low cost and the flexabilty as well as the quality of the pictures.

If you want to learn about Adobe Photoshop Elements there are many tutorials online that you can google -- just type in Adobe photoshop elements tutorials. You can also google Adobe Photoshop Techniques magazine. It comes out every two months and provides specific instruction on how to use various aspects of Elements. I've been a subscriber for two years and have learned a lot. It dates back to 2005. They have videos and past issues that you can look up. It's very useful. I don't know anything about Lightroom.

You can download Picasa for free online. You can also get 5 gigs of storage space online for $5 a year. That's more than enough for most people. It's easy to download them to the website and you can then email your pictures.
Since you're used to Picture It, I would also suggest getting Microsoft Digital Image Suite. I have the version from 2006. You can go or Ebay or Amazon.com to see the different versions. On Ebay they had one that had a bid for $8.
If you want to spend more, you could also get Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 for around $100. That does a lot more, but the other are very good if you just want to do simple editing.

I used to have PSE 7 and upgraded to PSE 9. It was definitly worth it. There is a lot more you can do and a lot of fun features. I think you can get a upgrade for around $70 online. If you like to play around a lot with your photos I would subscribe to Adobe Photoshop Elements Techniques magazine. It comes out every two months. It provides techniques that are specifically for Adobe Elements 7, 8, 9 and 10. They also have tutorials and videos at their website and you can access every magazine they've done since 2005.

I just joined up to this website and this is my first post. These are some fall pictures I took last year in Chapel Hill, N.C. and on the UNC campus. I live in Savannah, Ga., but the fall colors haven't hit here yet. I adjusted the color in Kodak software and Adobe Elements 9. I realize some of the pictures may be a little bit too saturated, but I really wanted to emphasize the color and the brightness. Let me know what you think.

I like the out-of-bounds effect. I've done that several times and I think it's pretty neat. I like the creation except I would have placed the bats differently. The three bats together on the right are distracting. They pull you focus away from the pumpkin. I would have either placed them in each of the corners to provide a framing or I would have grouped them together around the pumpkin so they would bring attention to the pumpkin.
