Hi guys.. thanks so much for the input. The computer is bootable and is working well since we did a disk repair on the problem drive.
I went with Raid 1 because we have had several drives get corrupted and become un-recoverable. I should be able to just replace the bad drive with a good one and have it restore the volume. The big challenge is the volume of data to back up. I just added them up and it is 8.092 TB. I have an ASUSTOR NAS with proprietary software. At work I had access to windows Server 2012 to manage backups but those days are gone.I am open to a different software as long as it is not crazy expensive. We are backing up her main photo drive now, it has been in progress for aprox 30 hours now and is at 40pct. Raspberry PI computers are amazing, so much bang for the buck. I will probably find a different back up software for this. Marla is a heavy user of Photoshop/Lightroom/ON1 and affinity. She reads and writes a lot more than a normal user to the drives and it may just be the volume of data that wears the drive out faster, could be unstable electric as we live in Rural TN. I did put a UPS on her system recently so that may help.

Hi Dick, I am Bob, her retired husband. just to address some of the things you suggested. I did get a NAS box with 2 WD red drives running raid 1. The box seems to be fine, but the ASUSTOR software does not seem to get the job done. It somehow changes the back up to local drives on her computer.

She runs a high volume of large (D-500) jpg and NEF files, probably 200 fotos a week give or take. We have burned through 5 or 6 drives in the last 3 years. All of the USB ports are working as far as I can tell. What usually happens is corruption of the files which turns into a nightmare of recovery from backblaze or local drives. The problem I have at the moment is a corrupted recycle folder on the external drive where her photos are kept. It wont let me fix or delete it. I end up having to do some administrative fix to the permissions to move forward. All very time consuming for me and frustrating for her.

Hi Everyone! Went through the various forums & couldn't find anything appropriate to post, so I'm leaving this here. If it's the wrong forum, I apologize in advance.

Hoping someone has some useful suggestions... I have a Windows computer (Win 10). It has multiple drives & back ups. Nothing works for very long before I start having issues. This has been an ongoing problem now for over three years.

I have an offsite backup (Backblaze - hasn't worked). A back up system here at home (isn't backing up to the actual drives). And I have a couple of external drives (a portable 4 terabyte drive from Seagate was purchased last July & is already having issues). My husband is a recently retired computer tech (built my computer several years ago), & he is stumped that nothing seems to be working. We're both extremely frustrated. He asked me to post here. I am not a techie, although I can usually work things out. I know I am over my head with this problem. He doesn't like working on my computer anymore (retired, & wants to enjoy life, not babysit & trouble shoot my computer or its issues).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've been using PSE 13 & Lightroom 5.7 on my Win 10 computer with few issues other than neither program recognizes my D500. I've noticed that Adobe products are glitchy from time to time. Hope you get your issues resolved soon!

I knew a woman whose daughter had a camel & a horse. If she spent time with the camel & then the horse, her horse wouldn't let her get near it until she showered first. Apparently camels are just that pungent.

Nice shot & back story. ;-)

I have the Nikon D500 & also shoot primarily with the Tamron 18-400 3.5-6.3. Biggest drawbacks are weight, & images in low light are very grainy. However, it's a good all around lens for most subjects, specifically outdoors & good indoor lighting. I'm pleased with its performance.

I'm so sorry to hear about your beautiful kitty. We lost our dog at the end of June. It's going to be some time before we get another one. Takes time to grieve before one can get another 4 legged companion. The worst part of pets is losing them.

These are all great, but that bear cub shot is the best! Thanks for sharing!

I've had my Tamron 18-400 for about 1.5 years now. I use it almost exclusively on my Nikon D500. It's not a fast lens, which means it has limitations in low light, but it does a pretty good job otherwise. I bought it for a trip to Tennessee, & it hasn't disappointed me yet.

I have the D500, D7000, & the D200. I love them all! However, the D500 has some features that are really great! Buttons light up in low light, it's more weather resistant (I haven't fully tested its capacity, but it can handle some rain/bad weather), & has different options for focusing. I'm still learning about it & discovering new stuff even though I've had it for 1.5 years now. Great camera!

About the only cons I have found is size & weight. ;-)

Best tip I can give is to start putting it through its paces.

Hi Everyone,

Just signed up for this forum. Looking forward to interacting with others here. I'm into my 4th decade of photography. Used to shoot strictly film (I was a hold out until digital cams got higher res), & now shoot strictly digital.
