First, although I’ve loved “taking pictures” for years, I still consider myself a rookie. I loved my Nikon D50 (we went everywhere together) but recently I got a Nikon D500 camera body.
What I’d like to know is what you would recommend as a good all-round versatile lens. I like street photography, landscapes, old buildings/ruins, dogs (I go sheepdog trials whenever I can), horses - action shots in general - not too much into portrait photography. Also, at the sheepdog trials, the action is usually far away. What’s a decent lens for that sort of situation?

Thanks in advance.

I have a D500 and my favorite all around lens is an18-140
I also use a 85-300 that's also easy to shoot with. With either one I use it for the same type of photography you speak of

I think you would like the Nikon 16-80 which is the kit lens for the D500

Many like the FX lens 28-300. I find the lens produces soft photos. Works very well as a video lens. For long-range shots I would consider the 70-300 FX version. A bit more expensive but is capable of taking tack-sharp photos in good light.
I shoot the Nikkor DX 35G 1.8. Great, sharp lens for general use. I also have and use a Micro Nikkor 85 DX. On the D500 it is a telephoto in the portrait range- 127.5mm. Nikkor 200-500 for long shots- lens is heavy.

What do you mean by “soft” photos?

I have D500. My general walk around is DX 18-200. After that, I won't buy another DX lens, FX only. For a little longer reach, such as out of close quarters I use FX AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR. Under $600 and incredible reach. I use it for nature and air shows. Very good lens.

I don't know your budget, but you might consider the Nikon PF fixed lenses. You'll have to do some research on them. Of course, they are expensive! But they are lighter and good for hand-holding. I hand-hold my D500 with a Nikon 200-500 (you may need the longer end of the range for the sheep dog trials) and it gets heavy very fast. I'm renting the PF 500 for a trip to New Mexico at the end of this month. I know several people who have the PF500 and love it. I've had one on order for awhile now, they are very popular. I've also got a Nikon 80-400, which is fairly nice but I like the results with the Nikon 200-500 better. You can put a teleconverter on the 80-400 or the 200-500, but then you'd lose light, which may not matter much if most of your shots are in good light. I'd suggest, if possible, you rent any lens before you buy it.

I think it will take two lenses to do what you want - a Sigma 17-70 and a Nikon 70 200 AF-P.

Tamron 15-30mm F2.8 G2. You'll love it!

The Sigma 14-24 F2.8 Art is even sharper, but more expensive.

These are optics that are as good as you can get - and relatively speaking, won't break the bank. There are a lot of less expensive lenses out there, especially for DX-only, but you will be making choices that involve compromise. I don't own either of these - I have a Nikkor 14-24 - but I found the Sigma to be way better. A friend has the 15-30 on a Canon and she gets some very good results with it.

I have both a Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 and a 18-200mm which I acquired when I was shooting a D300. The 17-55 is a great lens, but is too short for what you shoot. For my D500, I went to look at the 16-80mm DX zoom, but found it too expensive and too average for a lens that turns out to be f4 over almost all of its range. I ended up with a 24-120mm f4 full frame lens which I bought used for $425. And yes, I gave up some on the wide end, but I'm finding its 35-180mm equivalent coverage pretty close to perfect for day to day shooting. It's light and easy to handle, and gives me good results. I do not know whether it would be quite long enough to meet your needs. You'd have to decide that.

I have several lens that I use on my D500. The 18-300 spends the most time
on the camera, mostly for general use (street).
My next favorite is the 200-500.

Also own a D500 and it is a great camera for wildlife / birding and sports photography. I have a Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 that came with my D7200 as a kit lens and is a very good DX lens that would fit most of your needs on the D500, except for the longer shots. You might want to look at the Tamron 18-400mm and I am very pleased with mine, but it does have some quirks. My favorite wildlife / birding zoom is the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6.

If you are planning to eventually buy a FF body, then consider one of the many 70-200mm f/2.8 more professional lenses along with a 1.4x, 1.7x, or even a 2x teleconverter.

If you plan on staying with DX check out the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 There are YouTube video reviews of the lens and also Flickr has some dedicated pages with pictures. Cheaper lenses that produce good pictures and have vibration control are Nikon 24-85 3.5-4.5 and Nikon 70-300 4.5-5.6 VR ll. Both these are FX lenses that perform way above their price range. Research Flickr for pictures from any lens.
