I had to laugh at this typo. Cracked me up. As for the question, if it was me (and it was once not long ago) I would start buying full frame glass. I concluded that some day I would buy a full frame body, and about a year later I did. I have had good success with the suite of Tamron G2 lenses on my D500 and they can now be used on my D810 as well. Tamron makes quality lenses at about half the cost of Nikon glass.

I am a very close look Tamron G2s. I have heard nothing but good things about them

First, although I’ve loved “taking pictures” for years, I still consider myself a rookie. I loved my Nikon D50 (we went everywhere together) but recently I got a Nikon D500 camera body.
What I’d like to know is what you would recommend as a good all-round versatile lens. I like street photography, landscapes, old buildings/ruins, dogs (I go sheepdog trials whenever I can), horses - action shots in general - not too much into portrait photography. Also, at the sheepdog trials, the action is usually far away. What’s a decent lens for that sort of situation?

Thanks in advance.

The one lens that would cover most of the situations you cite and still be compact and lightweight, is the 18 - 200. I used it for years and it covered 90% of everything. It gives you the equivalent of 27 - 300mm, and is quick focusing and sharp.

Don't feel bad. I had the same thing happen to me. The spell checker doesn't know about Tamron. So, it spells it otherwise. I haven't made that mistake again.

I love the versatility of the sigma 18-300 with the d500. Good breadth and reach. Good quality pics. I highly recommend the combination.

It’s not a cheap lens but it won’t bleed you dry.

For versatility I would suggest a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 or a Sigma Art 24-105mm f/4, but the Sigma isn't weather sealed you will get better reach with the Sigma

Maybe a 16-80 f2.8-4.0. It is fairly expensive. You would need a longer lens for sheepdog trials. I have a 200-500 f5.6, which I use for birds, wildlife and air shows. It is expensive and heavy. The magnification at 200mm is 6, and at 500, about 15.

Ck out the Tammy 18-400 f3.5. Covers a lot of ground, produces good images, not onerous in cost.

In your response to the ask for walk around lenses you mentioned you have a Tamron 18-400mm that has some quirky issues. I also have this lens. What issues are you having? I haven’t noticed any issues, but I’d like to know what may occur or I’m missing.

I have the Nikon D500 & also shoot primarily with the Tamron 18-400 3.5-6.3. Biggest drawbacks are weight, & images in low light are very grainy. However, it's a good all around lens for most subjects, specifically outdoors & good indoor lighting. I'm pleased with its performance.

I have the D 500 and use the 18 to 300 Nikon And love it. I also understand the 18 to 400 Tamron is nice and both would cover just about anything and everything you mentioned. But of course there are many other lenses made for many other reasons and specifics but for an all around lens the 18 to 300 works well for me. I also have A16to 80 and A150 to 600 Tamron because I enjoy birding.

I use the 16-80 as a general walkabout lens and am very pleased with the results. I also have a 35mm for street photography. For wildlife I am moving away from the 80-400 and 200-500, both are great lenses, but not as good as the new lightweight PF primes.
