Good decision. I recently purchased a D4 with 318K shutter counts. Rated for 40K. Seller was a camera store person. He assured me that the ratings are very conservative and even if it needed shutter repair it was not expensive. I am 71 and figure we (camera and I) are at about the same percentage of useful life left. I have a D500 and Df so this will not be my primary camera. It is in very good physical condition and price was reasonable. I wanted to see what handling a professional camera body was like and to have another FX body. I do not worry about haveing so many cameras at my age because my 13 year old Grandson is a very good photographer and he will one day use all of this. Wishing you good health and great photos.

Lots of advice on this one.
This past spring I was taking a lot of photos of local HS Softball team then American Legion Baseball. Have been using Nikon 70-200 2.8. Needed more reach. Purchased a 1.4x converter for way too much money and it didn't seem to be great. I shoot aperture priority usually in the f3.2 range. Gives me plenty of shutter speed and blurred background. The converter changes me to a 5.6. Needed more reach. Nikon still lists 3 300mm lenses. $1500 $3000 and $6000. I purchased one of the $1500s on ebay for $500. It is a f4.5. I was concerned about not having the instance focus of the 70-200 but it has worked well and given me the desired results.
Good luck.

Great photos. I like using the pier the way you did. I go to PCB most every year. This year I do plan to go to Destin to take photos where the inlet comes in off the Gulf. Have some good photos from past trips. This year I am taking 3 film cameras. Two medium format and one 35mm. Will be shooting mostly B&W. Do have some 120 color film to use at Destin.

At one time I had a special insurance policy on my camera gear. Dropped it as digital cameras become obsolete so fast. Since then I have acquired several pro lenses. I am going to rethink this.

If budget allows and you do any kind of action get a D500. Has great focusing system and is a good low light performer. You need an off camera flash for more flexibility and eliminate red eye. Look at Chinese brands but make sure it in a ttl and designed for Nikon. I have 3 Nikon DSLRs but the 500 is my go to for most events.

I see some great photos that were taken with phones and just say that I had more fun with my 5lb camera that made loud mechanical sounds.

I have a D500. Upgrade from D300. Focus system is great. Take youth sports photos with it. Low light performance is great. I use the battery grip. Sometimes I just want to kiss it.

Would appreciate any advice or shared experience from anyone using a medium format camera. What kind of photography situations are these cameras best used for? Apart from the high price (gulp!) what are other downsides if any?

I see you mean digital. Get an old working film camera. I use a Yashica Mat 124 and recently upgraded to the Mamiya C330. I get medium scans when I get film developed. Have taken photos of old buildings. Detail is incredible.

Do it. I occasionally use my Nikon F2. I also use older 35mm cameras. Just shot a roll of 35mm on my Yashica Electro 35 at the Kennedy Space Center.

Jekyll Island GA, Driftwood Beach. Look it up. A Niece of mine who lives in Jacksonville FL got married there. Was her 2nd Wedding so I did not go. Saw her Wedding Photos and kicked my ass for not going. Would have gone crazy taking photos.
