I have a D7100 with about 50% DX glass and 50% split between FX glass and legacy Nikkor (FX) Ai and Ais glass. My current 35 mm film camera is a Nikon FE. I also use MF: Pentax 6x7, Bronica ETRSi (6x4.5) and a rarely used Rolleicord III (6x6). I have an opportunity to buy a very clean Nikon F6. The cost is within my budget. As a committed analog shooter the chance to buy what is arguably the best film SLR ever built (maybe the best 35mm ever built), with great compatibility with my DSLR (and even more so if I move up to FF digital) is more than very tempting. Again, considering that the investment in that F6 body would not be a financial problem, is there any good reason not to go ahead?

Since you are "a committed analog shooter", you owe yourself that F6. If I still processed my own film, I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat.

I still haul out my F2S from time to time just for the feel of a truly great camera.

The F6 was a great camera, to be sure. Though, if you have and use a FE, my personal favorite film camera was my FM3a. I don't think you would go wrong with either one of them.

The FE basically runs manually (match needle) and aperture priority. The F6 is like a modern digital SLR except using film. It makes the most use of ALL ( except DX) lenses and still will run full manual like my long lost Nikon F. I think it makes a better pairing with the D7100. And I still have the MF cameras for their IQ.

I don't shoot my film Nikons as much as I should - mine stop at the F 5 - but I'd make the move no question! Latest & arguably greatest.

"...I have a D7100" Absolutely stellar Nikon... totally love mine... been out shooting butterflies with an AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G Nikkor for the past week... amazing combo... below please find an image of a kayaker taken with the D7100 and AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G Nikkor (info: 1/2000, ISO 1000, f/8 WB: Auto, FL: 240mm). The D7100 is an epic APS-C camera! Nikon Rocks!

"...My current 35 mm film camera is a Nikon FE..." drmike99 another great Nikon... I have two Nikon FE's one with a 50mm 1.8 Nikkor. Both bodies work, albeit the meter is out on one of them. If you are interested I would love to find both of these Nikon FE's a new home... PM me with an offer, k?

Thanks for sharing!
All the best on your journey drmike99

F6 is a nice camera. The only problem that if you later buy new FF lenses it is not compatible with type E lenses. Nikon has been introducing most new lenses in type E with electronic diaphragm.

I owned one until about a year ago, but traded in for cash and a Hasselblad 500 C/M. I liked the F6, but it didn't offer enough of an edge over my F5 to keep it. The F6 has tremendous features, and I really debated my decision.

A bit earlier this year, I found a mint condition F100, and while it doesn't have all the features of the F6, I do like it, especially for backing up my F5. I like the FE, F3-HP, and the FM2n for a simpler experience.

I like the advancement with the Type E lenses, but I still like the older AF and AI/AIs lenses, as well.

I think the F6 is a good camera but I prefer to use my F5. My favorite is actually the F3HP. I have and like the FE, FM and FM2n also. I use a lot of AI lenses but I just warn the OP that many great new lenses are of type E. So if the OP doesn't have a lot of FX lenses and when he buys it he could choose to buy only non type E lenses but then the type E would work better on the new DSLR that the OP thinking about getting.

I don't think the F6 is particularly good value for money. There are other SLR cameras that are nearly as good but cost a fraction of the F6. I'd rather invest the money saved with another camera in film purchasing, processing and printing. For me, shopping decisions are primarily based on practicality and cost efficiency, not "I want the best because I deserve the best". It's okay to opt for second or third best.

Love my F6, but don't use it as often as I would like to.
Had the modification made to use Pre-AI lenses when I sent it in for a check and clean.
Was returned in about 3 weeks.

I'd say you really need to get that F6, considering your passion for film cameras, it would not be a financial burden, and your current go-to is the FE. I loved my FE and used it extensively until it locked up. I got the F3HP with motor after that, plus the FM2. Even though the F3 is much more camera, I prefer to shoot with the FM2 due to its smaller size and "feel"...
