In 47 years as a professional photographer, I have never lost any equipment or had any stolen, even traveling to 20 countries – but now my only digital camera has been stolen, right out of my home! Two young men came to install new flooring in my bathrooms, and one of them apparently took my camera bag when I wasn't looking. The next day, only one of them came back, so I have a good idea that the other one took it. He had been talking about liking photography. I thought my bag was out of sight, but he must have been looking around, and found it.

Sooo, now it's time to get a new one. I'll have to sell things off to get the money for one. I will put a few things on here at a time until I get enough money for a new camera.

I have some film cameras, and some coffee-table books personally autographed by Ansel Adams, if anyone is interested.

Very sorry for your loss. I find I dont trust anyone in my house anymore.
I wish I could help but just moved and have some issues myself.
Good luck. You will get a camera.

Of course you can't prove he stole it, but he didn't return the next day, did he. I would at least inform his employer, but he probably isn't going to return there, either. It seems odd that he would steal a camera, knowing he's going to lose his job. Some people don't think ahead.

On the plus side, you get to buy a new camera.

If you have home owners insurance you should be covered to some extent. You should probably consider filing a report with the police.

So you are just gonna let the asshole get away with it??? They don't have an address for this clown? I'm sure the police don't want to get involved. I've dealt with them before when my place was robbed.

The insurance would only pay for about 1/2 of the original price, AND they would raise my insurance rates. The police won't do anything because I can't prove who did it. It's his word against mine.

The police are so busy with accidents here since pot was approved, that they can't keep up. They actually started a civilian crash team to deal with minor accidents. They said it would take 50 to 100 more officers to handle all the accidents.

Tell the employer, ask the employee who did return. Get the address and hire some of the local goons to get your stuff back. (What is the title and how much is the Ansel Adams book?)

Bad news, Man!

Sorry to hear of this misfortune.

Do no assume the the police will not get involved. File a complaint IMMEDIATELY and, at least, secure a police report. If you have any insurance, you will need a police report to file a claim. Many insurance policies do no cover "mysterious disappearance", that means if there is no evidence of a break-in or no witness to the theft, you are not covered but you shoud check your policy.

If you are certain that nobody else had access to your premises, you should definitely follow up on your suspicion.

I hope you have the serial numbers of the body and lens.

You should not attempt to visit this suspect or his employer, however, that is the job of the POLICE- to follow up on your complaint. This guy may be known to the police- he may have a record for other criminal activity. The camera may show up in a pawn shop- second hand shops are monitored by the police. A visit to this guy's home by a couple of detectives may yield some results. Waht with the cost of a digital camera, this is not petty theft and should be reported.

Too bad, nowadays, anythg that is not nailed down to the floor can be stolen. I have no guns but I have 2 heavy-duty gun cabinets with combination locks and all the smaller gear in the studio gets locked up when not is use. There was a crew, in my city, that specialized in stealing photography, DJ equipmet and musical instruments at weddigs and events. At one time it got so bad, I took on an additional assistant to sit on the gear when on theses locations.

Call the cops and let them do their job!

Too bad that you didn't have a camera installed in your house to catch the bad guy. In this situation since there was no proof that the guy did it bc he didn't show up the next day, he must be the one who took your camera. On the other hand, just bc the one who came back the next day doesn't mean he didn't do it either.

It's a sad day, but you do get the opportunity to shop good used/refurbished gear, get good equipment and save some cash. Good luck, and don't forget to file a police report.

Were you dealing with a known company or were they local handymen? The cynic in me wonders if the suspect was even a worker or just an accomplice. As someone else said, don’t hesitate to contact the police. They may have other reports of similar thefts and may already have an idea who the guy is. Police depend on information to help put the puzzle together. I guarantee you’re not the first victim.
I’d really be pissed if someone I trusted stole something from me and I’d do whatever I could to see them caught.
