Off to Canada in August..... cruising Alaska, up to Denali Nat Park, spending time camping in the Rockies than cruising from Vancouver to Hawaii and spending 7 days there. I have the options of 3 lens to take......Sony 24-70 f2.8, 24-105 f4 0r Sony 70-200 f4
To take all 3 would be a real load. Any suggestions please what to take
Thanks

Keep the 24-105 on your camera full time. Leave the other two at home.
IMHO, I only take my pocket Sony HX99V, shoots raw, pop up viewfinder acts like a DSLR, 24-720 MM Zeiss T* lens, shoots auto fill flash, has a 6 stop built in HDR. What else could you ask for. I get beautiful 20X30 prints. I put my camera in a belt pouch so I am hands free. It is now my ONLY travel camera.
Check it out for yourself.

What do you guys think, I have a 50mm Nikon lens afs 1.8 g lens, is this better than the 50mm 1.8 af d lens, or are they equal in optics. Thanks Jim Bianco. I was thinking of selling my g lens for the d lens.

Keep in mind that the D lens will not autofocus on the new Z camera's. With that said, my pick is the G lens, I own it, I like it. The G lens also does better at a high frames per second, it keeps each exposure more accurate than the D because it's aperture is electronic.
My 50 G goes along with my 20, 24, 28, and 85 1.8 G's. Love um all.

Greetings, All -

I am planning to retire in a year and will have more time to devote to my photography. I realize I am opening a 'can of worms' but am seeking input from fellow 'Hoggers'. My equipment is old and starting to fail - I have a Canon 40D and an older Tamron 28-300, and a Canon EF IS 75-300. I will be starting fresh and, even though I like Canon, I am open to other brands.

40 years ago, I borrowed my aunt's manual Minolta SLR for photos of my new son and halfway through the first roll knew I had to have a 35mm. My Aunt died and left me an old life insurance policy of $7000 and I thought what better way to remember her than with a camera. I photograph WWII aircraft in flight, Birds Deer and other wildlife, grandchildren, landscapes, High school sports, and an occasional wedding. I would like something that could focus and balance lighting well for aircraft in flight - somewhat slower f-stop so the props spinning but not stopped yet that would keep the plane in focus and light balanced for various lighting conditions. The other concerns are weddings and group shots in lower light. I am concerned about graininess at too high of an ISO that the new cameras have.

I am considering a Canon 5D Mkiv, a Nikon D850, and also considering Mirrorless. I am not yet at the stage to use all the features on these but hope to be. That said, are there other, less expensive cameras that might fit the bill? Canon 80D or??? Nikon___? Other suggestions that might fit the bill and leave more money for glass?.

I plan to buy within a year - my apologies for the long missive, but many responders want details.

A friend I shoot with everyday in Florida with shoots the Canon 5D MIV. I have seen her shots with my most discussing (IMHO)(no snarky comments please) Sigma 150-600 lens, she gets eyeball popping results, I am amazed, she also shots that camera with the Canon 100-400 II with a Canon 1.4 teleconverter, again, amazing results.
I shoot the Nikon D850 with either the Nikon 200-500 5.6 or the new 500 5.6 lenses. I equal her in results. So, pick your poison, both will deliver.

OK, I know it's a photo site, but if the good people here can give me a couple of ideas of wildlife areas to visit. My sister and I are arriving on the 12th Jul at LAX for 5 weeks, and this is her holiday so the route she has decide on is basically LA, LV, Kingman, Jerome, Phoenix, Tombstone, Yuma.
I'm interested in mainly birding areas ( I would like to tick off the road runner).
We have to be back in LA the last 6 days or so as our nephew is an Author and is there for a book signing fair.
Would Nogales on the Mexican side worth going to as a walk over day trip?
If I don't answer, its because I am currently in Costa Rica moving between areas when I can as there is road blockages here.
So thanks in advance.
Take care

I am looking for a case for my NIKKOR 200-500mm. The case will mostly be for storage & transportation, but I will sometimes use it for carrying the lens while hiking. (yes, I know it is big :-)

I have looked at several cases and narrowed it down to two cases. 1. Tamrac Arc Long Zoom Lens Case model T0337-1919 or 2. Lowepro Lens Case model LP36307. There are plenty of reviews for the Lowepro case, but virtually no reviews for the Tamrac case, probably because it is a relatively new case. So, I would really appreciate it if anyone has that case and can give me some input. BTW, I am not adverse to getting a different case, but these 2 seemed to be good choices. Both companies make quality products & I have owned bags from both.
Unfortunately, the closest store that carries the Tamrac case is about 100 miles away from me, so it is not practical for me to look at them in person. Any help in comparing these cases is appreciated.

I use one of my old long Tenba camera bag for my 200-500. Works great and room for more of my stuff to boot. Many of these older Tenba camera bags can be had off ebay at good prices. But shopping around for a while may be required.

I just bought a Leica lens for my Lumix gx8 and what to buy comparable quality filters for it. What brands should I consider?

Filters vary in price widely. Many here will recommend B&W or more expensive glass. Tiffin makes a good all around quality. Remember, used filters sell for cheap and the mark up on some new filters is astronomical.
I was a pro for over 45 years, good glass will make most decent filters look great. B&H has sales on B&W filters from time to time and usually discount them from 50-70%. You may want to sign up to get their daily specials, there are good values there most days.

I'm in the market for backup body. Came across a D5100 like new with low shutter count at attractive price.

Even though it was introduced in 2011 is it still worth buying ?

They sell on ebay from $99.99 to about $200.00. I would say if he is asking $135.00 or less then that is an attractive price.

A friend asked if I could photograph some fireworks. I have my Canon 5D MarkIV, a 24mm wide angle and a 28-135 prime zoom lens. The dial set to "B" for Bulb. I have a good shutter range, f/stop choices and phenomenal ISO choices. I have a great tripod and will be weighing it down with my bag. I have my folding chair all dusted off. I will be shooting at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. I have two questions. What is an intervalometer?
Do I need it?

You don't need one. Just a place card to cover your lens between bursts of fire works. I remove my card when I heard the WOOOP of the fire work being projected into the air. I cover the lens when the burst ends. Yes Virginia, it is that simple.

Many of the nature preserves in Florida cater to the wheel chaired photographers. Green Cay, Peaceful Waters, Wakodahatchee, all have board walks. Every state has a person in state government that can supply a LOT of useful information about wheel chaired accessibility places. Call your state Rep. for the contact. They will be very helpful.

I plan to write an article for my Camera Club, the title will be "Is photography your hobby or do you just happen to own a camera?"
I want to hear your thoughts on this matter. You may be quoted without credit or I may use your UHH name; and I may shamelessly use some of your words in my opinion parts. I am looking for ideas, thoughts, and anything you feel is relevant to the topic. Thanking you all in advance.

I would change the title. "Photography, your hobby or status symbol?". "Is your camera a tool or a fool?".
"Does your camera have patina or is it a dust collector?" "Do your photographs shine or whine?"

I have injured my shoulders permanently. I can only lift less than a pound to my eye level. What is a good lightweight camera for getting good pictures? Are there any half-frame format cameras that are lightweight? I think I need a non-interchangeable lens camera because lenses are heavy when interchangeable. Is a mirror-less camera lighter? I would like a camera with a viewfinder.

Many will give you advice here. I am not exception. But my opinion is based on years of experience using smaller camera's. I would like to highly recommend the Sony HX99V. Shoots Raw, 24-720 mm Zeiss T* lens, pop up viewfinder acts like a DSLR, shoots auto fill flash, can do 6 stops of High Density Range shooting. I have taken it around the world and it fits in a belt pouch so no shoulder strap, no shoulder strain, just a belt pouch. I print 20X30 tack sharp enlargements from this camera without breaking a sweat. If your serious about your injured shoulders, get this one. You will not be sorry.

I like to only take one lens with me when on vacation. And at only 2mm difference I would take the more versatile 18-135.

Any ideas for easy ( portable, light, travel-friendly) solutions to stabilise a camera in a boat that’s moving on the sea ? Despite avoiding taking my full frame heavier DSLRs and lenses, I opted to take a Sony RX 10 mark IV. Very poor keep rate. Even when the boat slowed down or stopped it was rocking because of the waves. Really difficult to get tack sharp photos because of camera shake. A tripod would be very impractical (May not even be allowed). Ideas? Advice? Also is there a practical solution that works even for the heavier cameras and lenses?

If Nikon set switch on lens to VR and on the normal active switch select ACTIVE. Shoot at least 1/4000 sec. at a decent f stop, at least 3 to 4 stops down from wide open. Good luck.
Even though you may not need VR at such a high shutter speed, the boat movement makes it a sure thing.
