I'm in the market for backup body. Came across a D5100 like new with low shutter count at attractive price.

Even though it was introduced in 2011 is it still worth buying ?

Is it worth buying? That depends on what your shooting with now...the D5100 is a 16 mp dslr, with the same image quality as the upgraded bigger and more expensive D7000. If you move up to the D5200, you will get 24 mp.

When did it stop being worthy to own? Of course it's worth it. Mine is like the proverbial Energizer bunny, keeps cranking out stunning photos.

I have and use a D5000, great camera. As long as I do my part it produces great images. I bought it specifically for the articulating LCD screen. It is small, light weight, comfortable to carry. I can't think of anything negative to say about it.

Yes, an old camera will do its part if you do yours.

I always loved my 5100. Eventually the popup flash latch broke and the flash wouldn't stay down. I figured it wouldn't be worth fixing and bought a refurbished 7200. But I keep my 5100 as a backup...complete with the attractive black electrician's tape holding down the flash! I refuse to give it up completely! I think the 5100 will serve you well.

I beleive it does not have a motor so lenses without one will not autofocus.

They sell on ebay from $99.99 to about $200.00. I would say if he is asking $135.00 or less then that is an attractive price.

Lots of good values on the older Nikons (all models) at good prices and with warranty at some of the larger resellers (MPB, KEH, UsedPhotoPro (Roberts) B&H, Adorama, Cameta, Hunts) etc. With the older stuff on Ebay, look it over carefully, is there ability to return (of course there is the Ebay guarantee), check sellers rating. Decen t camera, good luck, don't pay too much!

Go with mpb. Very happy with customer service and products. Shipping times excellent. I bought my Nikon D7000 used with two kit lenses. Check my photo gallery here on my waterfall workshop for examples.
