I plan to write an article for my Camera Club, the title will be "Is photography your hobby or do you just happen to own a camera?"
I want to hear your thoughts on this matter. You may be quoted without credit or I may use your UHH name; and I may shamelessly use some of your words in my opinion parts. I am looking for ideas, thoughts, and anything you feel is relevant to the topic. Thanking you all in advance.
Alternate universe title - "Is Photography your passion, or do you just have a Camera." It's been 32 days since I missed taking some photos - hard core addict!

Certainly not the only defining factor, but one who owns and uses more than one body and multiple lenses for different purposes, and is not a pro; is a dedicated hobbyist.
Like many of us.
Just about everyone owns a camera or cell phone but few consider photography a hobby. I suspect most hobbyists got into photography at an early age, used cameras for family snapshots most of their lives, then got into it as a hobby at some point. I think what drives the hobbyist is the desire to get the skills and equipment to create photos that they consider to be good, rather than just waiting for a lucky shot to appear among the snapshots (which does happen as well).
I have been active as a photography enthusiast since the age of eight. Other folks may have a home camera that they use occasionally like any other kitchen tool (i.e., screwdriver, cheese grater) when the need arises. I don’t think the latter group would be considered “enthusiasts”. BUT the lines have been blurred significantly by ubiquitous smartphone cameras.
"Is photography your hobby or do you just happen to own a camera?"
What day of the week is it?
Some days I'll be working in the yard and see a butterfly or toad or turtle. I'll either ignore them, or grab the point and shoot out of the car and take a couple of shots before getting back to digging. --- A man who happens to own a camera. (The heck with the pictures)
A week later, same situation, the tripod comes out holding a camera with either a micro or telephoto lens. Once the critter(s) is fully photographed I walk around the yard or across the street to the pond looking for more things to shoot. --- Photography is my hobby. (The garden be damned)
---
I hope you're not trying to alienate your members. Whatever your list of criteria for either is bound to piss a few folks off. That's like asking if you take good photos or just snap shots.. I think I would rather ask the group if they consider themselves a pro, or as a hobbyist. At least this way to qualify as a pro you can probably find established criteria printed somewhere and just use that which would keep your Opinion from entering the picture..

Having warned us, we can take appropriate steps to avoid having our copyright misused: We can avoid posting.
Stages from hobbyist to photographer:
Camera
Camera + additional lens
Camera + 3 additional lenses
2 cameras + 3 additional lenses
2 cameras + 10 additional lenses
4 cameras + too many lenses to count + DAM software + multiple archival disks +..............
Receives money for photographs: game over.
My advice is priceless so I give it away freely.

Photography is my hobby. I started taking pictures when I was in the Navy (1966-1969) and kept doing it through the years. When I retired from the railroad in 2010 and moved to Florida I was finally able to really get into it.

Actually, what I'm talking about is gathering the thoughts of many people. I have said why and how I may use the information. If you feel that I would be violating your rights in some way ... simply don't respond.

I have no list, no criteria, I made no mention of "Good", "snapshots", or qualifying for anything. I expect that after reading all of the responses I will be able to put together a coherent picture ... from the responses.

Gene, I sincerely thank you for that response.

Reminded me of a line from Mork & Mindy. Mork was talking to his home planet and explaining how women stay home, take care of it and raise the kids ... all for no pay. The Leader asked "Is that because her contribution is worthless?" Mork responded "No, it's because her work is priceless"
