I am looking for a case for my NIKKOR 200-500mm. The case will mostly be for storage & transportation, but I will sometimes use it for carrying the lens while hiking. (yes, I know it is big :-)

I have looked at several cases and narrowed it down to two cases. 1. Tamrac Arc Long Zoom Lens Case model T0337-1919 or 2. Lowepro Lens Case model LP36307. There are plenty of reviews for the Lowepro case, but virtually no reviews for the Tamrac case, probably because it is a relatively new case. So, I would really appreciate it if anyone has that case and can give me some input. BTW, I am not adverse to getting a different case, but these 2 seemed to be good choices. Both companies make quality products & I have owned bags from both.
Unfortunately, the closest store that carries the Tamrac case is about 100 miles away from me, so it is not practical for me to look at them in person. Any help in comparing these cases is appreciated.

I am using this case for my 300 2.8 and I really like it - BIG enough to leave hood and camera body attached ! Not cheap tho ...... There are a couple other cases on this page also.

Good morning. Before I answer, let me confess my own frustration around folks replying with responses that do not directly answer the question that you is asked.

I went through the same process that you are going through after discovering that the included dust cover was not acceptable for transportation of the 200-500mm zoom. My search did not lead me to either of the cases that you mentioned. What I found at my local camera store was a Tamron branded case intended for their 150-600mm zoom. It is a decent fit to the 200-500, and its construction is acceptable, if not outstanding. It was $44.95 something over a year ago. If you don't end up with a definitive answer to your question, that might be a low cost alternative that could serve until you can make a more permanent decision. I apologize, but There is no specific part number available anywhere on the case.

I could dig that on a chest mount for hiking around. The waist/hip mount rubbing & swinging with every step you take? Thanks for the link.

I use one of my old long Tenba camera bag for my 200-500. Works great and room for more of my stuff to boot. Many of these older Tenba camera bags can be had off ebay at good prices. But shopping around for a while may be required.

I have a nikon cl-42a hard case that I bought for my 80-200 f2.8 lens. The case is 4.5' dia by 8" long (interior) (5"x10" exterior. It has a carrying strap and is in good condition. I don't use it anymore and you can have it cheap.

Joexx I use my Nikon CL-L2 Soft Case for 400mm, 500mm and 600mm for this lens as well as my AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR (which came with this case)...
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/247039-REG/Nikon_4315_CL_L2_Soft_Case.html

It is likely the finest way to carry/protect you optic...
btw, I shoot league soccer commercially and have to setup in some pretty challenging situations (like in pouring rain)... Never an issue... the aforementioned case is "built like a tank"

That said, I would not consider hiking with this case nor the AF NIKKOR 200-500mm for that matter, there are far wiser choices i.e. AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6e ED VR which will give you equal results at a faction of the weight (680g verses 2300 g). I own both and there is no discernible difference in image quality and I appreciate having 70mm at the wide end. The VR on both optics is identical and likely some of the best image stabilization that Nikon makes... Yes I hike with the AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6e ED VR and it is literally a joy to carry...

Hope this helps Joexx or is at least food for thought
I wish you well on your journey...

I have a Safrotto case which is perfect for my 200-500 with the lens hood inverted. Snug and secure. Comes with a detachable shoulder sling. Had originally ordered the Lowepro but after several weeks on backorder, found the Safrotto. Very good quality at less than half the price of the Lowepro.

...I use the Ape Case ACPROLC18 Professional Large Lens Case...I chose this case because it also fits my camera attached to the lens...I don’t have to attach my camera in the field...

I have the Nikkor 200-500mm lens and bought an Apecase large professional lens case. Not only does the lens fit but I can also use it as a carry case for the lens with the D850 attached. https://apecase.com/product/acprolc18/.
