There is also an old car in the other end of the barn. It's an old olds from the same period. There is a pickup truck under a shelter right behind the house, but it's so covered up with vines you can hardly see it. I have a few photos of the property taken in the winter with every thing dead. I'll post a few of them later.

This house was built right after the Civil War. It has been abandoned for the last fifty years. Additions were made prior to falling into disrepair. The barn in the back has to be somewhat newer.

Just a guess, but if the two shots were taken quickly, The camera could have been still saving the first shot when the second exposure was made.

Just don't fly though a thunderstorm. When I was in the Army in the sixties, I was flying a light twin carrying a General from Ft Rucker, Alabama to Louisville, Ky. This was before most light twins had weather radar, and we depended on our radar controllers to help us avoid thunderstorms when visibility was poor. We had a change of controllers and our new one said he saw no storms ahead of us. Less than five minutes later, bam! We were in the worst turbulence I experienced in my almost forty year career as a pilot. Within a minute or two we had oil covering our left wing behind the engine. The engine was shaking so bad in it's rubber mounts that it cracked an oil line to one of the accessories. It was the longest three minutes I think I ever flew waiting to get out of the storm.

FWIW, a pilot I knew from the local airport where I learned to fly lost a wing in a bad storm and crashed killing all on board.

Someone once said that if you enjoy what you do for a living, you will never work a day in your life. I guess the doctor and school superintendent are proof of that!

I am a retired airline pilot and I have to agree with the above statement. I never felt like I was going to work. I was getting to go flying again and getting paid for it. How sweet is that?

Experienced something similar yrs ago. An assoc and I had some free time on a bus trip to San Antonio, TX, and were touring the Mission Trail. At one stop I encountered an elderly lady fussing with her small camera. I asked if I could help. She said she had been shooting all day and the camera had never run out of film. I took the camera into a room and turned off the light. Opening the back, yep, film had not been loaded onto the take-up spool. Broke my heart to give the nice lady the bad news.

I hate to admit it, but I had the same thing happen to me in Bangkok. I was on a three day "vacation" from Viet Nam and was on a River Cruise. Our tour guide told us to get ready to see some really colorful scenes coming up as we turned into a canal. There were Lots of small boats all displaying colorful fabrics displayed on racks. As we approached the area, I reloaded my Topcon with a 36 exposure color film. I started shooting all of the beautiful displays and colorful dressed girls on the boats. As I passed 37 exposures, then 38 and 39, I realized I had screwed up. I opened the back of my camera, and sure enough, the film leader strip had not engaged on the takeup side. I got NO photos on that roll. Still kicking myself for that .

Very nice.

For those wondering what "445"means, it's probably the torque rating of the engine, that's what Buick did, "named" their engines by the torque rating. Also one can tell here by the narrow valve covers this is a nailhead engine. The intake valves and ports provide a very good path for the air-fuel mixture to reach the cylinders. But this used space for the exhaust valves and ports, the exhaust valves are very small as a result. The valves are a small as nails (not really).

I had a 64 Riveria that was Carolina Blue. Beautiful Car. It looked just like the one in the photo. It had been ordered from a dealer, and had NO extras. No power seats, windows, AC, nothing. But I loved it. Got it from a dealer when I got back from Nam in '67. Paid $2000.00 for it. I wish I still had it. For as long as I had it, I was told the 445 was the cubic inch displacement of the engine. It was a big block and would pass almost anything but the gas stations.

As the Earth slowly cools, all of that magma in the core has to go somewhere. The volcanos are the outlet . They are obviously more numerus along fault lines, hence the Ring of Fire around the Pacific Rim.

Not to be "that way" but the OP is in western Virginia (Roanoke valley, the Star, Lynchburg, Christiansburg etc.) and the New River and Coopers Rock are in West Virginia. In "eastern" VA there's Mabry's Mill and in West Virginia there's Babcock SP Grist Mill. Western Virginia is a nice area (the wife is from there) I'm from the "County Roads" side (I'm actually related to the first permanent resident of the state). That being said, lots o' photo ops in both places.

What rock did you live under? Those locations are all in Virginia. You can call it what you like, but they are definitely not from West by God Virginia. My wife is from there. I lived just down the road about fifty miles in Martinsville. Yes, we can call it western Virginia. It is in the hills.

I love Roanoke. I grew up in Martinsville, but went to Roanoke a lot. Got my Private license there. I went to Tech as well, so Roanoke was the go to city. Great view from the Star.

You can learn a lot here on UHH. Welcome aboard.
