I shoot both Raw and JPEG and manage them in Lightroom 4.1. I can't figure out how to import ONLY the JPEG or ONLY the Raw files from the camera without specifically checking them individually. When I view them prior to import, the file names of the Raw files and JPEG files are identical except for the suffixes. If there is an import filter that can be applied, I am not aware. When I get them into Lightroom I would like to manage the Raw and JPEGs separately. Is there some method that I can employ to make this happen during import without checking them individually? If not, is there some method to segregate them after import without individual handling? I am referring to several hundred photos at times or perhaps even thousands, so individually checking them can be time consuming. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks
Dan

I just received an email from Adobe offering CS6 at a discounted price of $199, which is $400 off the original price. According to Adobe, the discount is offered as a way of enticement to upgrade from Elements to Photoshop. I have Elements 8 and was anticipating upgrading to Elements 11 when it is offered which, I assume, would be in the near future. I am mostly a hobbyist and have been quite comfortable with Elements, but at this price offering for CS6, I was wondering if it would be worth it to do the upgrade or just wait for the new Elements which, I assume, would be offered for around $100. My question: would the extra $200 price tag for CS6 be worth it to me or should I just wait for the new Elements to be issued and purchase it instead? Is Photoshop that much better than Elements?

I just purchased an older Canon 5D Classic. It is full frame and some of the lenses that I presently own will not work. I find that I need a wide to short tele zoom. I am looking at the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and the Sigma 24-70 f2.8. I plan to purchase it used on Ebay or Craigslist, depending on the deal and description. Any advice from you guys would be appreciated.

Okay, here's the deal. I am a retiree who likes photography as a hobby. I enjoy all types of photography, but my favorite is probably macro due mostly to the fact that the subjects either are very slow or don't move at all. I also enjoy landscapes, but my opportunities are limited. My two grand children occupy my interests in portrait photography. I have tried birding, but don't seem to have the patience necessary become good. To these ends I have a Canon nifty-fifty 1.8, a Canon 85 1.8, a Sigma 105 f2.8 macro without OS, a tamron 10-24, tamron 70-300, a couple of Sigma walk-arounds (17-70 and 18-250, both OS) and an older Sigma 170-500 f5.0-6.5. My question is that I have tripped and fallen into about $1,000 that I can use for the purchase of another lens to add to my repertoire. I am considering the Canon 100 f2.8 IS, but I would also like to include one of the Canon 70-200's (probably a used f4.0, either with or without IS).

Are there any recommendations from you guys. You all seem to be very astute when it comes to equipment needs evaluation. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Just to show how great RAW is..... I went to our local rock covered river in hopes of grabbing some shots of Great Blue Herons. To my amazement, there seemed to be a convention of herons cavorting about. I had previously set my 60D to take RAW and JPEGs, but I went ahead and selected the contrast, sharpness, etc that the camera affords. I took a couple of hundred shots very quickly. There was such an abundance of subjects that I never glanced at the LCD screen, just kept firing away with my Tamron 70-300. When I got home and began looking at the images on the computer screen, I was surprised to find that all the jpegs were in black and white, which in my haste I had inadvertently set the camera up for. However, the RAW files were all in great color, all the data having been saved in spite of the stupidity of the camera operator (me). This, just to show that RAW files can forgive even the dumbest photographer.

Hope this helps someone.

The problem was that I had intended to copy all the JPEG files to a disk for reviewing by my daughter-in-law. Family reunion. However, we found that she could not review the DNG's on her PC. The original JPEG duplicate files had been converted to DNG files in the export task process(my mistake).

But now, as I said, I have reconverted the DNG's which had inadvertently been converted from JPEG's, back to JPEG's.

Whew, all this converting/reconverting has given me a headache, but at least now I know how it's done. Thanks to all for the great feedback and information. Lightroom is a different animal, but I am gradually getting the hang of its methods of file management.

Thanks again,
Dan

Yes, I thought about the Trash folder, but I have this really bad habit of emptying it as I fill it. Learning never stops, does it?

Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the quick reply. I actually figured it out myself. What Lightroom giveth, Lightroom taketh away.

Thanks

This is a Lightroom 4 question..... or, should I actually say, it is a Lightroom 4 "I messed Up" type question. Anyway, here it is:

I don't have much experience with Lightroom, but that is no excuse for what I have done. I have a 60D set to record JPEG and RAW CR2 files simultaneously. When I imported those to Lightroom, I placed them all into a folder named "Temp". This operation went flawlessly. Then, and this is the problem area, I exported them to another folder. I apparently clicked on the wrong settings because when they all wound up in the next folder, they had all become DNG files, both the JPEG and RAW CR2 files. I didn't notice the error and deleted the original "Temp" folder. Now, I am stuck with all these DNG files. I would like to convert the original JPEG's back to JPEG's. I'm not sure that Lightroom 4 can do this. I also have PSE 8 and an older PS 7 version. I have attempted to find cheap (spelled FREE) software that can convert, but so far have had little luck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This may be the first online program that I have seen that actually works. It seems to work fine on my 60D, but I believe that there may be some EOS Canons that it won't work on. Anyway, here it it. Check it out and let me know your thoughts.

Oh yes, it won't work with the FireFox browser, only Explorer browser which allows the Active X downloads.
