Wide/Short Tele Decision Advice Sought

I just purchased an older Canon 5D Classic. It is full frame and some of the lenses that I presently own will not work. I find that I need a wide to short tele zoom. I am looking at the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and the Sigma 24-70 f2.8. I plan to purchase it used on Ebay or Craigslist, depending on the deal and description. Any advice from you guys would be appreciated.

I'd like to keep it under $500.

I have a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG Macro that I got with my 5D2 and its a great little lens. There is one on Ebay right now for like $200.00. I bought the new Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II USM and after I ordered it I read that it was not released yet (and no word on when it will be)

i have the tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and love it..right now they have a rebate on them till the end of september..it should be right in your budget..
this lens is on my camera most of the time...i have gotten excellent results.i have never tried sigma..but hear that it also is a good lens..if you can go to a camera store ask the clerk to let you shoot a few shots with each lens..go home and check them on your computer ..then decide..recently i tried out the tamron 18-270mm and was not pleased with the results..stick with the smaller range for better detail and control. if you purchase any prime lenses or wider ranges stick to the brand names..my 2 primes are strictly nikons...
