Convert DNG to JPEG

This is a Lightroom 4 question..... or, should I actually say, it is a Lightroom 4 "I messed Up" type question. Anyway, here it is:

I don't have much experience with Lightroom, but that is no excuse for what I have done. I have a 60D set to record JPEG and RAW CR2 files simultaneously. When I imported those to Lightroom, I placed them all into a folder named "Temp". This operation went flawlessly. Then, and this is the problem area, I exported them to another folder. I apparently clicked on the wrong settings because when they all wound up in the next folder, they had all become DNG files, both the JPEG and RAW CR2 files. I didn't notice the error and deleted the original "Temp" folder. Now, I am stuck with all these DNG files. I would like to convert the original JPEG's back to JPEG's. I'm not sure that Lightroom 4 can do this. I also have PSE 8 and an older PS 7 version. I have attempted to find cheap (spelled FREE) software that can convert, but so far have had little luck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dan

Thanks for the quick reply. I actually figured it out myself. What Lightroom giveth, Lightroom taketh away.

Thanks

Before you do that you may want to check your Trash folder. You may be surprised to find that missing folder there.

Yes, I thought about the Trash folder, but I have this really bad habit of emptying it as I fill it. Learning never stops, does it?

Thanks for the tip.

Dan,

Go to Youtube.com and search lightroom import and lightroom export. You will learn how to do this stuff fast.

Until you really know what you are doing, stop emptying your trash or recycle bin.

When you imported the pictures into the temp folder you do not need to import them to another folder. You only import them once. If you don't like the folder name 'temp' , then in the 'Library', just right click the 'temp' folder and click on rename. Now you can give it a new name. After you rename it, you probably want to move it somewhere on your hard drive like to the pictures folder. Just left click and hold the folder and drag it on top of the pictures folder. See, no import again. You can also just create a new folder in the pictures folder and the select all the pictures in the temp folder and drag them to the new folder. Again, no re-importing. When you import images, you need to check all the options in the import panel to the right of your screen. Open each of the arrow down options and see what they offer. There are a lot of choices and if you don't understand one of them - stop. F1 key will bring up the help screen. give it a minute to come up. If you hit the F1 key 5 times, it will bring up 5 help screens. My computer is slow and I have to be patient. Type in the search field the option you don't understand. Read and then keep going. Watch another youtube video. There are hundreds of videos on stuff like this. Good luck

PS - a dng file is exactly the same as your camera raw as far as the amount of picture quality and data. You can work on the dng files non-destructively just as you can a normal raw. After you are finished developing (post processing in LR) you can then export them for web viewing, printing, or just convert to jpg or tiff. Again youtube to print or for web publishing etc.

What's the problem, though?

A DNG file is a RAW file. You can edit that file
in Lightroom. When you export that file from Lightroom,
you can export it as a .jpg. You really haven't lost
anything at all.

The problem was that I had intended to copy all the JPEG files to a disk for reviewing by my daughter-in-law. Family reunion. However, we found that she could not review the DNG's on her PC. The original JPEG duplicate files had been converted to DNG files in the export task process(my mistake).

But now, as I said, I have reconverted the DNG's which had inadvertently been converted from JPEG's, back to JPEG's.

Whew, all this converting/reconverting has given me a headache, but at least now I know how it's done. Thanks to all for the great feedback and information. Lightroom is a different animal, but I am gradually getting the hang of its methods of file management.

Thanks again,
Dan
