Focal lengths are virtual (retro focus) or actual depending upon the design. Theoretically 50mm is the distance from the rear element to the “film or sensor” plane. For instance, if you cut out a rectangle of the DX and FX sensor and held them each at 50mm from your eye you would see the apparent field of view. If you took the same cutouts and held them 200mm from your eye you would find the same relative view. So focal length is a constant, sensor size will vary. This is also why view camera lenses are so relatively long, and why wide angle lenses for DSLRs and SLRs are retro focus which allows them to compensate because a true wide angle will interfere with the mirror box.

I'm guessing the E620 will still make a handsome paperweight.

Mine is is decontented 600, it’s mahvahlus, let’s see, 12mpx, IS, live view, battery pack, balances really nice with the 50-200 f2.8, heck how much is a 200-400 f2.8 Nikkor?

What a bunch of spendthrifts! 😎 for this old dog I bought Olympus em1,em5, e-600. Bought used. We bottom feeders must stay strong. I use 4/3’s lenses, cheap cheap cheap. 12-60, 50-200 panaleica 14-50. I’ve got less than a grand I bet, I’m an eBay slut. Also still love using my D2X. Bought it to use the 80-400.

My little peeve is this: Nikon calls their DX 35mm f1.8 a wide angle lens, why? Because to clear the mirror box it’s a retro focus design, or because why? Please help me.

What lens are you considering to buy with it. While you can mix and match brands, the longer the lens, I suggest matching them to the brand.

If the 40-150 or 300, then em1ii
If 100-400 then G9

Keep in mind the focusing systems are different. I like Olympus because it uses both PDAF and CDAF, and I can use old 4/3 glass, like my 150f2 with an adaptor and still have excellent AF.

Shhh don’t share our secret! I use the 50-200 f2,8. That’s 100-400mm of reasonably fast glass for chirp chirp. My EM-1 v1.0 is everything I could ever want and being able to use 4/3 is wonderful! Like the 12-60 f2.8. Not to mention the cdaf of the EM-5’s with the Pana-Leica 14-50, which is 4/3 but cadf optimized

What one-upmanship? I was pointing out to the OP that his solution for sharpening and noise reduction would not work for a 4K large monitor since the resulting image would be so small. And further that having a 24 megapixel sensor and reducing the image to 1.3 megapixels is simply not the best way of handling noise. Did you think I was bragging because I have a large 4k monitor?

yes, and for that I apologize.

Wow! OMG!

How much resolution do people think you need? For large and even larger prints - 8-12 mb is more than enough. A 36 mp or even a 45 mp camera won't make a big print look better, unless you are OCD and need to examine the print at a distance of 12" with a loupe to see how the dot pattern was sprayed onto the paper by the printer. That is completely

for a 24x36, or even a 40x60 you don't really need more than 6-8 mp. The extra mp is great when you use excellent lenses that have high acuity and you need to crop a bit. Then it comes in handy.

I've printed this image, which is 2208x2619, or 5.8 mp, to 24x36 and sold 8 prints with absolutely no complaints about image resolution or softness.

Resolution needed for printing is probably the most misunderstood item in photography. At a viewing distance of 4ft, this image looks clean and noise free, with tons of fine detail.

Of course, if you are a PPP - Pathological Pixel Peeper - you will never have too little noise or too much resolution. I am glad that those that buy my stuff aren't like that. . .

Agree completely, heck 3.5 mx from my old Fuji S1-pro look great, yeah it required vicinity interpolation but 6 is plenty for 11x14

Since I use a 28in 4K monitor with a native resolution of 4096 × 2160 pixels the size of the images you suggested would still be unacceptably low resolution. The resolution of your images would be about 1.3 mp. My monitor is capable of a resolution of approximately 8.8mp, or almost seven times the resolution of your images. I would use 1.3 megapixel images for low-resolution purposes only, dependent on the file size in megabytes.

Wow! Aren’t you special

I am wary of the 24-120 Nikon. Even the latest version.

Heck I had both previous versions and liked them a lot, on crop frame they gave me an ideal 36-180mm field of view, never felt I was giving anything up image wise. Now I’m an Oly user, use the 12-60 f2.8, cost less even than the used price on the 24-120 VR 1, never understood the negative reviews, learned to understand most are meaningless
