I was just wondering how many on this forum use old equipment for they hobby. I found if I buy older equipment I can save a ton of money and have just as much fun as if I purchased the latest gear. I love shooting birds and other animals but the latest gear would cost me 10,000 dollars. I use a used nikon D3 and a sigma 500mm f4.5 prime and together it cost less then the tax on a new setup. Just something to think about.

As the old saying goes... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Absolutely nothing wrong with totally enjoying what you have! And, your setup sounds like a very good one for you. Enjoy!👍🤓👍

Well, a little over 20 years ago I bought an Olympus E620 through the on line PX for a thousand bucks. Now it has developed problems and the local repairman says it would have to be sent to the Olympus contract repair company in Conecticut and I would pay through the nose. It would cost much more than the camera is worth. I have a used Nikon D100 I paid 50 bucks for from KEH and I use a Sigma 18 to 200 mm lens and that suits me just fine.

I have and still use my D3 at times, it has 587,000 actuations and still running strong, it feels great in my hands. Even though main camera now is the D810 I still feel very comfortable using this work horse of a Camera. The D3 always was a fantastic camera and still is and I feel you will be very pleased with performance of Camera.

While I have a new camera (80D), my T2i is still going strong and I still use it. I may, however, loan it to a friend who has a P&S that she is unhappy with.

You must mean a little over 10 years ago as the E620 was released on March 2009.

I acquired most of my old Nikon manual lenses used. And I got a used 135mm Leica for $500. My film cameras, all used but one. I have been reluctant to get more modern electronic gear used--but should get over my phobia. My Nikon set up is bomb proof for film for under $1,000. State of the art for a pro in 1980. Lenses all work on my D750 as a bonus.

Does a 1968 Canon FL 55mm f/1.2 lens adapted to EF mount count?

Too bad I learned this lesson AFTER buying $15,000-$20,000 worth of gear over a couple of years. (now all gone)

Now I shoot with a $25.00 film camera and am happier than when I had my Leica M or 5DII.

For me, it depends on exactly what equipment we're talking about. Cameras and lenses I never buy new. But accessory stuff (filter adapter rings, tripods, neck straps, etc.), I sometimes do buy new.

Old equipment, you ask. Here is a listed of cameras I have and use: Leica IIIb -- Retina IIc --Retina Reflex IV ( I am using that camera as I am writing this reply.) Zeiss Ikon Contessa (Great camera for use during the winter outside.) -- Pentax K-1000 -- Pentax ME Super -- Canon AE-1 and Canon AE-1 Program. Have a Voigtlander VAG (1931 to 34) Not test yet with film, need back to hold 120mm film. Don't have dark room to work in. Have lenses to fit on all the cameras listed. The Pentax K-1000 is the longest owned camera I have. Get it in 1983. Have sold off a lot of old cameras in the last two years.

This year Nikon D700 is 10 years old, was released in July 2008. I own other cameras but D700 I enjoy using the most. If I do my part right D700 is always faithful to deliver excellent images. Still going strong.
