Greetings Hedgehogers
I have about 40000 photos in several folders on my computer, what is the best way for back up? I want to keep them as same folder system.

I removed two 750GB 2.5" hard drives from a laptop I replaced. I bought two hard drive enclosures on Amazon (about $10. each) with USB 3 connector.

Good Morning Hoggers,

About 2 months ago a bear demolished my bird feeder. Based upon animal control recommendations, I'm now ready to reinstall a new feeder and need a recommendation on a trail camera so I can monitor the feeder at night. I haven't felt the need for a trail camera before so I have no idea what features I need, or what the options are (color/B&W, mounting options, storage capacity, how to download images, angle of view, etc).

I would intend to mount the camera on one of the posts on my front porch and the feeder will be about 20 feet away. I've attached a couple of photos of the demolished feeder if that helps you.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

We all talk about how a picture should tell a story. The story, however, may be personal to the observer or universal to all who see it.
I remember a photo, perhaps even on this site. It showed a blind woman striding confidently from left to right across a bridge over a body of water. With her right hand she was holding the harness of a guide dog. In her left hand was a slack leash to another dog, who was walking with her nose-to-knee. The picture was taken from the other side of the roadway, and the critique was: "so what. Just another snapshot." Now, I know only a little bit about the blind, and slightly more about how guide dogs are trained and selected. What I saw told a wonderful story. It told about the confidence a guide dog gives a blind person. How the dog makes a difference in their lives. But the other dog on the left? Guide dogs usually retire at about age 8. So my interpretation includes the love and respect that the blind person has for her retired dog. To me the photo told a story of disability overcome, and love and trust. I just got a warm, fuzzy feeling viewing that photo. Would anyone without my knowledge also react to that story? Or is it just another snapshot?
How about a section here on the hog devoted to story-telling photos? I see very few of them.

I think "illustrate" a story may be a better term.

I do not recall the picture, but I learned a lot about guide and leader dogs for the blind from this description and the comments.

Has anyone had a bad experience selling or buying on UHH?

Seller may want more than commercial (e.g., KEH, Adorama, MPB) will offer, but may sell for less.

I do buy on e-Bay, but only for books and other things -- never photo. Too much double-talk. Have to research the item and the seller.I have seen people bid more than new once they get wrapped up in bidding competition.

I am not looking for anything, but watch out of curiosity and seems like UHH sales go pretty smooth.

Entering argument: know what you want and what you intend to pay. For seller, realize you are probably selling to an intelligent buyer. Respect both ways.

1) EASY TO USE: Ans: Phone

2) Viewfinder and DSLR shape: Ans: Silly-I. The larger LCD display of the phone is far superior. Silly-II. The shape of a camera has nothing to do with the images it creates. Silly-III. What is the purpose of this 'camera', to impress other people in the gardens and parks or people on the cruise boat?

3) Single zoom lens, not interchangeable: Ans: Is the purpose to create better images or impress people on the cruise? If they desire an SLR shape, get the SLR benefit of a zoom like a DX 18-140mm.

4) Good picture quality: Ans: Is that before or after the images are processed by this photography novice?

5) Easy to download, post to social media, etc: Ans: Can't be easier than the internet-connected phone

6) No price limitations: Ans: Any new equipment will be more expense that just using the phone already onsite.

From my research, a camera like the Lumix DC-FZ80 would seem to meet the criteria, but I can not speak to the EASY TO USE qualities. I would appreciate hearing from Hoggers who have these same general criteria for their impressions and recommendations.

Ans:

Sony has similar models the Lumix, such as the Sony RX10 Mk IV (24-600mm equivalent). The pocket models are even more portable for the opportunistic photographer, such as the Sony RX100 MK VII, or the various G-series Canon PowerShot models.

You might be more of a 'friend' in trying to steer your friend away from this idea; and rather, help them be a better phone photographer. Or, help them 'see' a smaller pocket model is a significant step-up from the phone, in both capability and complexity to use. Anything beyond the phone will add complexity to usage, even the simple step of getting the image files off the camera (card).

I am looking at a Z 24-70 2.8 lens from Nikon and wanted to get your thoughts on buying refurbished. I have never bought any items that were refurbished and would like some input whether positive or negative. Thanks, Grandpaw

IMHO Quality Control for "refurbished" may be more stringent than normal because reputable manufacturers of anything don't want to see it again.

Some items were returned because they were not what the buyer wanted but cannot be resold as "new". Others had some defect and were returned under warranty. Either way, the manufacturer does not want the cost of turning it around a second time.

I have noticed (around here at least) the trend of photographers is to favor Nikon cameras over Canon or other brands.
The irony is that they are not even using the top models but rather a basic cropped sensor model.
Is this an indication of better quality or just minimal budget.

I suspect that UHH membership ranges from brand-new novices to top-of-the-line experts. Most of us are probably amateurs and we also span a broad range. I believe most have joined to learn and issues are not always limited by the brand or model they cite. It is difficult to understand why some experts would participate other than to share that knowledge. During the COVID lockdown, my brick-and-mortar camera store hosted free zoom sessions with experts from various manufacturers. I attended all brands and these company spoke-persons usually identified equivalent terms from other brands.

While some, especially pros, can afford the latest and greatest, I suspect most of us are striving for and achieving above average results using equipment based on personal needs and cost priorities. I do remember one pro still used a camera several generations old because he knew it so well and it satisfied all his needs -- even had it refurbished rather than upgrade.

The more I learn, the less I know.

Your not going to like this but take a look at a smart phone, Samsung 9+. DPreview gave it high marks 85%. It has an adjustable aperture and a telephoto lens, plus you get a GPS so you won't get lost.
400 bucks at Amazon

I use my cell phone as my "pocket camera". I did not like my full size Brand X (too big), and I was very happy with my old Samsung 4. I also preferred the Samsung operating system over Brand X and that may be a factor in whatever cell phones you use.

I was not looking for a "pocket DSLR". I traded my cell down to a Samsung 10e and have been very happy with it. The 4g network satisfies my needs. It is significantly smaller -- comparable to my old Samsung 4 and it does compare well with the iPhone equivalent in reviews. I got one in "Very Good" condition from Verizon, and they are available on Amazon.

If i need 5G, I will probably just upgrade to the small Samsung 22 which is about the same size -- and size is important to me.

If I upgrade my DSLR, that could be a D500 or mirrorless -- that will depend on the feature I need to upgrade for.

Thanks for the positive responses, regardless of what one wanted printed or why.

There appear to be three options, and all print a variety of products.
print-my-pdf.com
Manualslink.com
https://www.camera-manual.com/index.php

These are B&W, but as many pointed out, I have the color in the Adobe Acrobat file.

For those who suggested alternatives, I do have David Busch's excellent book.

During COVID lockdown, my brick-and-mortar camera store hosted free, on-line video training with various manufacturers. These were extremely well done and the speakers usually addressed equivalent terms and products from others. I learned things from these experts that were not in the book or the manual -- even from other brands.

And I appreciate the criticisms. While I do not agree, we have the most potential to learn from (and should always welcome) differing opinions.

Thanks for the suggestions.
On eBay, the 8.5"X11" copies sell for about $35.00 so price is not open-ended.

Has anyone printed a copy of their camera reference manual?

I know the majority of today’s photographers prefer the electronic copy, especially in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format, but I would like a printed manual.

Print copies are available on eBay, but they are printed on 8.5”X11” paper – the manual format appears to be 5.51”X7.78”. In addition to the paper size, I would also like to select the paper for the cover and pages as well as the binding -- considering cost options.

I took the file to an office supply store, but they would not print it.

I think the cell phone may be a good choice for size and convenience. Set it up to save photos on MicroSD

I just traded back to a Samsung S-10e to get a smaller phone. It does everything I need and has a decent photo capability (when I do not have my camera with me). It is comparable with the equivalent i-Phone. For more capability, the S-22 may be a good choice.

Refurbished phones are available from the carriers and Amazon. Those in "Very Good" condition sell fast and I had to check frequently for availability.

If she has a cell phone, stick with the brand she is familiar with. I had a Samsung before my last phone. I discovered how different (not better or worse) two androids could be.
