My 15-year-old granddaughter is going to London for a week on a school trip. She has been advised to bring a point and shoot camera. I don't know what is available or what would be appropriate. I would welcome your advice.

Great idea for pictures, but is that much expense worth it for a school trip? Also, have you ever used a phone overseas? It isn't free. In fact, a typical 15 year old could run up some very high international roaming charges. Likewise, would you buy a high end point and shoot like a Sony for a school trip. I'd look at the used market for cameras only a few years old. Others can make specific recommendations.

I think the cell phone may be a good choice for size and convenience. Set it up to save photos on MicroSD

I just traded back to a Samsung S-10e to get a smaller phone. It does everything I need and has a decent photo capability (when I do not have my camera with me). It is comparable with the equivalent i-Phone. For more capability, the S-22 may be a good choice.

Refurbished phones are available from the carriers and Amazon. Those in "Very Good" condition sell fast and I had to check frequently for availability.

If she has a cell phone, stick with the brand she is familiar with. I had a Samsung before my last phone. I discovered how different (not better or worse) two androids could be.

Yes I have. In April I was in 7 countries in Europe. my T-mobile bill went up $3.00 because my wife got lost and called me. We did a lot of texting and did not cost us anything...Used Facebook and was online a lot also...Unlike ATT a few years ago when we bought a package for i think it was $150 for free text and talk...we ended up with an additional cost of over $500...We left ATT for T mobile and have not once regretted it. Bill is $115 every month. This includes 2 iPhone 13 Pros, unlimited text and talk..Extends to Canada and Mexico. oops sorry about the commercial

Wal-Mart is selling point and shoot cameras for under $300.00 or you can purchase a Sony RX100 for around $500. These are the cheapest point and shoot camera on the market unless you purchase a Sony RX10M4 for around $1,600.00.

You better ask your granddaughter! When mine was about 15 she got to go to Washington DC. I loaned her a Sony RX100, arguably one of the best P&S cameras. It never left her suitcase.

A female teen's photographic mission is not related to their grandparent's.

The same granddaughter that refused to use my "good" camera has 2,879 followers on Instagram because she is a good photographer. If she takes a good picture it needs to be shared NOW! Taking the camera home, pulling the card, putting it in a computer, processing and then sharing makes any good photo useless. It is too late!

The same granddaughter is now a junior at the University of Washington, doing very well in pre-law and gets to study in Madrid for a term. I'll ask her what her photographic plan is!

Good advice. Her father asked me. Personally, I think her iPhone would be adequate.

One odd part about being the father of a teen girl is that he will never have a clue about anything. If the father were my son, I might advise him to talk to the cell phone company and ensure the girls cell phone use won't cost him a fortune.
