I am looking at a Z 24-70 2.8 lens from Nikon and wanted to get your thoughts on buying refurbished. I have never bought any items that were refurbished and would like some input whether positive or negative. Thanks, Grandpaw

In my fleet, I have only two used lenes. My lens from Nikon Refurbished was everything I expected. The other lens from a major retailer had an obvious flaw when in use and was returned within an hour of receipt. They quickly provided me with a refund and even followed up. I have bought a different used lens from them, and it works great. My personal caution, go Nikon first and if not, go with the two major retailers in NY.

I purchased a refurb tele extender from Nikon. It works very well with no issues. I recommend them.

My refurbished purchase was a Nikon D810. It looked brand new and had only 176 clicks on it. Everything functions perfectly and I'm glad I made the purchase. There are no plans for any more cameras or lenses in the foreseeable future but if that changes refurbished will be the first option.

Consider the various UHH brag stories, such as:

a, I bought two, returned the one I didn't like ...

b, I tried it out, decided I didn't like the weight ...

c, I used it for a week, then my wife found out and I had to send it back ...

Each of these scenarios would generate a re-boxed "refurb", an almost (essentially) new item of camera equipment. The warranty is limited, but the price is lower too. A great deal overall, with no more risk that paying more for actually 'new'.

I have purchased refurbish from the and used from KEH without any problems whatsoever. At least that’s been my personal experience. Good luck.

I have not purchased referb Nikon but have purchased referbed Canon from the Canon factory site. They offer the same warranty as new. Never had any problems. I would not have a problem with a Nikon Factory Referb product. Enjoy

My experience is somewhat different from the majority here. Late last spring, I ordered a refurbished 24-120mm f/4 F mount lens from NikonUSA when it was on sale. It arrived fairly promptly, was cosmetically in great shape, and worked fine. I took it on a trip in June and gave it a pretty good workout. Over the course of the trip, the zoom action started binding up. It eventually locked in place. When I returned home, I contacted Nikon and got authorization to return the lens for repair. After a wait for parts from Japan, the lens was repaired and returned to me in beautiful operating and cosmetic condition. The repair order indicated that the "zoom ring" and "name ring" had been replaced.

My assessment (which I indicated on my repair request) is that the lens had possibly been dropped by the first owner (or somewhere else along the way) and simply returned instead of being honestly sent for repair.

Based on my experience, I suggest the following when buying a refurbished product:
1. Put the paperwork in a safe place where you can find it. You'll need it if the lens needs to be returned or sent for service.
2. Register the product immediately when you receive it. It can be done on line and takes only a few minutes.
3. Immediately and vigorously test the product. The warranty period is only 90 days, not a year as for new products.
4. Take advantage of the initial 14 day return period if necessary. (My problem did not show up until later than that, though.)
5. If a problem arises, contact Nikon support immediately. Don't waste time asking here what you should do.

I still have my lens and use it extensively. I am very happy with it. I saved a lot of money and got a great lens. It just took a few additional weeks that I wasn't expecting for everything to result in a happy ending. Yes, I would consider buying "refurbished" items from Nikon again. But now that I have a much better idea of what they really are and the risks involved, I would be very disciplined about it and would absolutely follow the five steps I outlined above.

Just be aware that most of those discussions are 7 or 8 or more years old...

I have three Nikon refurbs and they all perform flawlessly. The only problem with buying a refurb is that you get none of the original bits and pieces that come with a new item - manual, hood, etc.. A Nikon refurb direct from Nikon is a real
deal.

How long is the return period and how much is the savings?
