I moved to the Olympus MFT system a couple of years ago and have enjoyed it overall; however, one drawback I've encountered is noise in low-light situations using higher ISO (of course). I've seen quite a few people online mention the wonders of Topaz DeNoise AI, and I'm wanting feedback from the UHH members who've actually tried it or use it. I did search the forum and saw discussion from as recent as a year ago--some liked the old DeNoise 6 better than the AI at that time (though I understand the v6 is discontinued); but has AI improved over the past year? I should mention that I do have Affinity Photo which comes with a noise filter, but I haven't been able to produce significant improvements with it (maybe due to inexperience/incompetence, haha). So does anyone here think DeNoise AI is truly amazing, or not so much?

I do realize that Topaz offers a 2-week trial, btw, but I've read where people say AI is more complicated to use than the v6, and I'm not sure at my recreational level that I'd be able to master the learning curve in time to make a good judgment in that time frame; thus I'm soliciting opinions.

Thanks!
Kevin

I've found that both Topaz DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI are amazing and easy to use. The one time I needed support from Topaz, they were excellent.

AI is not complicated at all. All you do is click a link according to how much noise you have. Or is all automatic. I just use the default setting mostly. It is well worth the money. They had, still might have, s special going on for denoise, sharpen and megapixle. Best money I've spent on a while. Works as a standalone or right from Lightroom.

Her is a link to my first try. It was SO READY TO USE.

Software competitors often leapfrog each other as new releases add or fix features. Early in 2021 I purchased Topaz DeNoise after trying it and others out like DxO. They finally fixed the performance issues (though moving to a M1 Mac Mini sure helped). Up until the last release I have thought they were getting it right finally. Then this summer On1 introduced NoNoise. I felt it was much better than Topaz DeNoise but since On1 is my primary post process software I was a bit upset they wanted to charge loyal customers for the plugin so I waited until On1 released 2022 version of On1 Raw which had the NoNoise filter in it as part of the development tab in the edit module. I love it for a couple of reasons. First it is part of my workflow inside On1. I do basic adjustments then apply NoNoise against the RAW or otherwise image. I have it set to do the least adjustments (something Topaz DeNoise doesn’t have) in preferences. Generally it takes 1 click. It is now part of my raw processing non-destructively.

If I was using Topaz DeNoise from On1 I would have to use the plugin (On1 works with most PhotoShop plugins) which would push the raw image out to Topaz DeNoise where I could apply the adjustments and accept which pushes the Topaz DeNoise adjustments back to On1 as a layer. This was in an improvement in On1 in the latest release. So I can easily compare both and NoNoise wins hands down in my opinion.

Now that isnt to say that the next release of Topaz DeNoise will be better than On1 but right now it is my go to filter. I have been going back to old images shot on film then scanned via an epson flatbed scanner years ago. Many have lots of noise especially the old Agfachrome slides. I am shocked at one click on these cleaning the noise up, adding a bit of sharpening which give me usable images or better. Nothing I have done in the past comes anywhere close to what NoNoise does. If you don’t have On1 you can get NoNoise as part of the plugins package and use it with Lightroom etc or a standalone. IF you don’t have a great post process then I would take a look at a trial of On1 raw 2022.

Love it, and it works well as a stand-alone, or integrated inside LR. It is a favorite of pro wildlife and sports shooters.

Here a ISO 1600 shot with my 50mp Sony A1 that was cleaned up with Topaz Denoise AI without losing any detail. A Great White Egret bends its neck to clean its feathers on the Caribbean Island of Sint Maarten/St. Martin.

Sony A1, Sony 200-600mm lens, 519mm, ISO 1600, f6.3, 1/2000 sec. First the full frame and then a tight crop from some shot.

Cheers

It is a great product. I used it last night to salvage five pix of Moose taken just after sunset; otherwise, I would have tossed the whole lot.

Agree with most everything mentioned. First thing I do in PP. I shoot in low light, my camera max is 25,600 ISO and it removes the noise beautifully and sharpens a bit too. It’s a great tool to have.

Thanks but I have already done that twice to no avail. I have not gone to the length of dropping backwards to a prior computer OS which was the only thing Topaz could suggest. I’m well pleased with what I get from On One DeNoise so will stick with it for now. A new computer is in my future but not until the new, more customizable mac’s are released next year.

Yes, it works amazingly well! Even with pictures that don't appear to have much noise will benefit from it. It also does a great job of shapeing the picture at the same time, so much so, I don't use the Topaz sharpening program anymore. It does take some time to process, on a large file it may take 30 seconds to complete, but since it's the last thing I do for a picture, I don't mind the wait. I use in Photoshop as a plug in so I can keep the denoize on a seperate layer.

I have recently tried On1 NoNoise with outstanding results. It is simple to use. I think that it's worth pointing out that both DeNoise and NoNoise work best if applied to the original RAW file before any other processing is done.

Here's another long-time ON1 Photo Raw user. I have found ON1 NoNoise to be at least equivalent to DeNoise and most of the reviews I have seen comparing the two have ON1 at least slightly better (consistency, range of effectiveness). Results are best if NoNoise is applied to RAW files before any further post processing. Also works with jpg files, but range of data available in RAW will work best. I have found using the AI is extremely simple/quick and I have only done manual fine-tuning necessary only occasionally.

When I loaded Topaz DeNoise AI is automatically loaded to Photoshop under my filter menu. I have had it more than a year and use it every day. It is my go to filter. It has two sliders and an automatic function. If you want more than it does automatically you can slide the noise and sharpen sliders to your liking. Now, Photoshop also has sliders for noise and sharpness but I prefer Topaz sliders.
Again, it is a tool, and like any tool it can be abused or used correctly. I do mainly wildlife photography and sometimes I have to crop extensively. That is where Topaz shines. Topaz also shows you and preview after each adjustment so you can continue to make slight adjustments until you are satisfied. It also shows you a close up box of your image that you can move around to other parts of your image to assure your adjustments do what you want.
This tool is not for everyone, but if your just out of focus or you need to crop in, this is the tool for you. In the following example of a Green Heron in flight that I took yesterday, the crop is about 1/8 of a RAW full frame image. I believe Topaz made the shot look a lot better than if I had not used it.
The decision to go to Topaz is up to you, I am glad and happy I made the move.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Great shot Bill

I would be very interested to hear how and where, in your workflow, you use the Topaz plugins
